OCC Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion 30.10.2020

The Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion releases, ALMOST PRESIDENTIALTHE FILM, in the run-up and post-election of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election on Nov. 3. The ...film is part of the online project ALMOST PRESIDENTIAL that looks at vice presidents and failed presidential candidates, investigating names forgotten to history or reduced to one-liners and supporting roles outside the spotlight. ALMOST PRESIDENTIALTHE FILM is a 50-minute feature film oriented around a Zoom presentation, and presents new work by six artists who examine the American political landscape from an unfamiliar angle. Featuring sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, and video by PIO ABAD, DEBORAH ASCHHEIM, MATTHEW BRANNON, and CINTIA SEGOVIA, and exhibition curators MARISA J. FUTERNICK and REBECCA SITTLER, ALMOST PRESIDENTIALTHE FILM highlights artists whose previous bodies of work have challenged the visual and rhetorical representations of former presidents and their legacies. Though our national histories are often written with the victors in mind, failed candidates have a substantial impact on intangible ideas surrounding ‘electability’ and how we visualize presidential Power. They also have the potential to expand the political imagination of the electorate while shaping the platforms and strategies of future candidates and political movements. Presenting a timely exploration of political rhetoric, failure, and gendered dynamics within political systems in the U.S. and beyond, including Mexico and the Philippines, these six artists combine fiction and historical fact into an active survey of political material, text, and image. ALMOST PRESIDENTIAL was co-curated by Marisa J. Futernick and Rebecca Sittler. The film was directed by Tyler Stallings, director at the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, and edited by Kevin Holder.

AMIR ZAKI - EMPTY VESSEL: The Photographic Arts Council Los Angeles invites you to join a special conversation between photographer Amir Zaki and Tyler Stalling...s, Director Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion at Orange Coast College. Friday, July 24, 3:00 - 4:00 PM (PST), Free Continuing Amir Zaki’s dedication to photographing built and natural landscapes, Empty Vessel is a multi-year project composed of two interrelated bodies of photographic images that create a tension between the fragility of broken ceramic vessels and the solidity of quintessential, California, concrete skateparks. Selections of the works are currently installed at the Culver Center of the Arts at University of California Riverside through October 4, 2020. Empty VesselAmir Zaki was originally organized by the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, Orange Coast College, and curated by Tyler Stallings, where it was on view in Fall 2019. Zaki’s work is an extension of the New Topographic photographers from the 1970s by extending their focus on our human-made environment into the suburban and exurban environments throughout Southern California. The body of work is accompanied by Zaki's first internationally distributed monograph, California Concrete: A Landscape of Skateparks, published by Merrell Publishers.
