How I Found Blake Beckcom So many of you come to our Christmas Show each year, always looking forward to hearing fun stories & great music, indulging in a decadent dessert, and watching Blake Beckcom. So, who is this guy who always shows up at Christmas? Wait, there’s more!... The first few seasons at Off Broadway Live, you also saw Blake in a show called Chicken Fried Gospel (By the way, we are bringing it back next season!) And yup, he will be in that show! So, who is Blake Beckcom and how does he always find himself in these shows? Go back to 1989. Skyline Church was in Lemon Grove. Each Christmas, they did something called, The Living Christmas Tree; a lot of them. From the day after Thanksgiving to just before Christmas Eve, we performed up to 10 shows each week, with four shows every Saturday. That’s where I met Blake. Every Christmas, for quite a few years, he and I, along with his fiancé, now wife Gwen, and my fiancé, now wife Jennifer, would reunite for a marathon of shows. But all things drift away. 1999. Sonrise Church in Santee wanted to put together a unique day of music. Southern Gospel had made a nationwide resurgence in recent years, and I was asked to be a part of a quartet for this purpose. Walking into rehearsal, there was Blake. We had such a good time putting those songs together, we stayed together for 5 years as a group, traveling and singing throughout the San Diego and Riverside region. But all things drift away. 3:00am, 2013. I had been tossing and turning all night thinking of what we were going to do next at Off Broadway Live. Suddenly, I sat straight up in bed and said out loud, Chicken Fried Gospel! Scaring the daylights out of Jennifer, who was sound asleep, I looked at her and said, We need Blake Beckcom! The rest has been a fun history whose time is coming around again. Chicken Fried Gospel with Blake Beckcom is coming back next season! While getting ready to re-open, we hit a roadblock we can not get around, and unfortunately, the only choice is to cancel the remaining shows of Tuesdays At The Cafe, DECADES: Flashback, and Shopping For Men. The virus that sidelined us in March, has taken so much from all of us, and these shows are a casualty of this pandemic. For those who have tickets to see these shows, we are so sorry. How I Found Steve Jewel If you read How I Found Garry Hall you know Jewel (We don’t call him by his first name) found his way to stage, one show, one song at a time. What you may not know is how I found him in the first place. I coached baseball for 18 years to a couple groups of boys from age 5 until they were 16. Most of these boys went on to play Varsity High School and College Baseball, but not all. Some were just filling the gap until they knew what they wanted. I dr...afted Tyler, Jewel’s son in his last year of playing ball as a 12 year old. I won’t go into detail how he made the game winning catch in the playoffs, but, that’s where I found Jewel. A few years ago, we reacquainted ourselves through mutual friends, who invited us to see Jewel play in his band at House Of Blues. Afterward, He and I talked about his Walking Bass style of playing, someone who uses the whole stage and interacts with other band members, I totally dug his vibe on stage. He, in turn, was intrigued that a former baseball coach turned himself in a theater owner/performer. I’d love to help where you need, he said. I thought, I hear that all the time, but, it never pans out. But, he kept pressing and I’m glad he did because he became, not our back up sound & lights guy, but THE guy. That is until Barry Bedore, the leader of our band, said we needed bass player for a specific upcoming ENCORE Supper Club Show, if the budget could allow for that. It stretched us but I said yes. I did not want to press too much but suggested Jewel; Barry agreed. One show, four songs, had him running back and forth from the sound booth to the stage throughout the show. We liked him, he added a good vibe to the band. Let’s do it again, even more songs, more running back and forth, we really liked him. Finally, we made a decision, pull the trigger, keep Jewel on stage and get another lights & sound guy. From his first ENCORE, Jewel has pushed our theater forward with lights and sound, then adding a lot of personality to the stage, helping our actors with character development in our Theatrical Shows, and finally taking over as Artistic Stage Director of ENCORE Jewel's fingerprints are all over our theater and we have grown into a more mature and professional regional presence as a result of his work. How I Found Garry Hall As we continued growing our ENCORE Supper Club shows, our current sound & lights man (we’ll talk about Steve Jewel next time) started running from the booth, when it was on the main floor, to the stage to grab his bass and play a couple songs. Over and over this kept happening to the point we made the decision to keep our bass player on stage. Problem? We needed a new lights and sound man.... Jewel (we do not call him by his first name) had recently worked TECH with a guy elsewhere and thought he might be a good fit. Ok, we’ll try him. Wow! Garry Hall was really good, and his talents just kept coming. He continued to give us more and more; the lights and sound he created put us into a different universe. As we got to know him more, we found out he played and was lead singer in a band. Great, we knew he knew what we needed on stage. Back to ENCORE. We were about to do part two of ENCORE Supper Club Chicago and we needed someone for the show; Jewel called me and said, Hey, you know Garry’s band just released a new CD. I told him I had a copy and would give it a listen right after I got this Chicago Thing resolved. Jewel said, You need to listen right now. I put the CD in the system. What?!? This guy has a voice! He sounded just like Robert Lamm from Chicago. ENCORE Chicago with Garry in it, was a hit, but he wasn’t done. That show turned into ENCORE Garth Brooks, ENCORE "The Doobie Brothers", ENCORE The Beatles and Best Of. Garry has firmly planted himself as a key performer in our ENCORE Shows. More? Ok, Leonard got sick one weekend while we were performing our theatrical show, Tuesdays At The Cafe, and on a couple days notice, Garry stepped in and nailed the part. To say Garry Hall is important to me and this theater is an understatement. He is a talented performer, has collaborated with me on scripts for the theater, has helped our performers with character development in our Theatricals, and his role as Technical Director of Lights & Sound only gets better and better. Thanks Garry, you rock! Literally!
