According to @WilliamsInstitute, LGBTQ+ people of color are twice as likely to test positive for COVID-19 as non-LGBTQ+ white people. That’s why our LGBTQ+ community must stay safe, get tested & get vaccinated. Find the COVID-19 resources you need. http://covid19.eqca.org/ #EQCA

We're happy to share that Yu Ming is offering a second At-Home Learning Kit for 3-5 year old children living in Alameda County who qualify for public assistance. These February kits are themed around the Lunar New Year and Black History Month, and continue to provide activities and supplies to foster math and early literacy skills. Will you let your families know? Attached are flyers in 3 languages. Just like in the fall, they require each family interested in a kit to regist...er at https://tiny.cc/prek-kit. You may also complete the registration for the family. Please note that we plan to send an announcement about our second kit to families who requested a first kit in the fall as well. Families may come pick up their kit at their upper school campus the first week of February, or, if you are currently offering in-person services, they can drop them off at your site by Monday February 1. Yu Ming would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of their February 5 Kindergarten application deadline for your families looking for Kindergarten options in Fall 2021. They have two upcoming virtual information sessions where families can learn more about Yu Ming and how to apply: Thursday, January 21, 5:30-6:30pm (sign up here) Wednesday, February 3, 10:00am-11:00am (sign up here) These info sessions will be hosted by Yu Ming's Affinity Groups: Families of Black & Latinx Descent, LGBTQ families, Families with Special Needs Children, and Families of English Learners. Translation will be available. Full enrollment application information is available at this link (and this link for Spanish).

We mourn the loss of Monica Roberts. Her reporting changed the way trans people are represented in the media. Monica Roberts, a Black transgender news reporter who was the first reporter to cover trans people with sensitivity and empathy, passed away in Houston, Texas on October 5th. Frankly, I got tired of Black trans women being disrespected by the media, the trailblazing reporter told CNN in November 2019. Much of the coverage of trans people used phrases like man in ...women’s clothing, Roberts said. Through her work with the award-winning blog TransGriot, Roberts provided a blueprint for the national media on how to report about trans people with sensitivity and empathy. Roberts used her platform to report on transgender victims who received little or no press. She never misgendered her subjects and she told their stories the way she believed they would have wanted them told. With Roberts’s guidance and influence, things in media slowly began to change. And although Roberts never had the opportunity to cover the recent killing of Felycya Harris, a 33-year-old Black transgender woman who was found shot to death in Augusta, Georgia, and the 31st known trans person killed in 2020 according to Blavity, her advocacy for trans lives led major national outlets to cover her death. Whether it was an accomplishment or a horrible tragedy, Roberts’s reporting, which began in 2006, paved the way for mainstream and local media to follow in her footsteps. TransGriot went on to be recognized for its influence at the GLAAD awards in 2016. The power of a blog, I’ve learned, to shape events is mighty, as she accepted the Special Recognition Award. It’s even more potent when you walk the walk and back your words up with deeds. #monicaRoberts #blacktranslivesmatter #transgriot #sayhernameFelycyaHarris #transandblack

Recognizing the Ohlone in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day. The coastal region of central and northern California, which includes Oakland, has a history recording back to 2000 B.C.E. The Indigenous inhabitants are the Ohlone people- a Native American tribe formally known as the Costanoans. The Ohlone people occupy the land and utilized its resources. Like most Native American tribes, the Ohlone feel a close tie to the natural environment. The hills and mountainsides, covered with a combination of grasslands, redwoods, and oak forests, while the coastlines consist of large rocky areas and vast marshlands. #ohlone #indigenouspeoplesday #oakland #bayarea
