Today, we have contractors out in the hills near Oakland Zoo doing grading operations and other maintenance on fire trails. Properly maintained fire trails help ensure crews and apparatus can safely access and prevent rapid wildfire spread in the high fire hazard zones.

The successful law enforcement operation that led to the seizure of illegal fireworks is a great reflection of the regional commitment there is to addressing an issue that challenges both police and fire departments and threatens lives, property, and the environment. The Oakland Fire Department is working collaboratively with OPD to promote community safety and mitigate the use and impact of illegal fireworks as we head into the July 4th holiday, including the collection and... disposal of unused fireworks. Between Memorial Day and Fourth of July, we encourage all Oaklanders to think of the health and safety of themselves, their families, neighbors and animals before they participate in any firework activity. If you know someone or see someone who is in possession, selling, and/or lighting fireworks, please call the Fireworks Tip Line at 510-777-8814. You may remain anonymous when providing information. Those caught with fireworks, even the Safe & Sane brand, will be fined up to $1,000. Possession of large quantities of fireworks carry penalties of $5,000 to $10,000 as well as imprisonment.

The fire in the 6200 block of Crown Ave was listed as UNDER CONTROL as of 1127 AM. Eight people were displaced. An aggressive fire attack by over 30 OFD firefighters responding confined this incident to two structures and nearby vegetation. This fire is still under investigation. A preliminary assessment from the scene today pointed to a potentially overloaded generator, however #OFD Fire Investigator does not want to rule out that the age of the generator may have been a contributing factor. Investigation ongoing. More updates to follow.

Great effort by all personnel involved. The 3 Alarm fire’s proximity to a gas station and nearly a dozen residential structures along Quigley Lane above I-580 could have devastated the community and grown more rapidly had OFD crews not prevented the spread so quickly. Details: The initial dispatch call came in at 450PM. It reached a 3rd Alarm at approximately 530PM which raised the total number of firefighters on scene to over 50, including command staff. The biggest concer...n was making sure that the embers from the vegetation above I-580 did not reach the backs of the homes on Quigley Lane. The crews were able to prevent that by going into an aggressive fire attack creating a firm line between the freeway and the homes. OFD appreciated the support from Hayward Fire, Fremont Fire, and ALCO Fire who were pre-positioned in the area due to the Res Flag conditions. Also, Oakland Police and CHP played an important role leading traffic control along a busy 35th Avenue corridor. The cause of this incident was related to an encampment that was behind a fence above the west bound side of the freeway.
