Early this morning, at approximately 1:00 AM, Oakland CHP Officers responded to a traffic collision on I-880 northbound just south of 29th Avenue. Upon arrival, Officers discovered a Subaru Forester that had collided into the rear of a tractor trailer within the #3 lane. Unfortunately, the male adult driver sustained fatal injuries. The female adult passenger sustained major injuries and was transported to Highland Hospital for treatment. At the time of the collision, the #1 ...to #3 lanes of northbound traffic were closed for construction in the area, and the tractor trailer was parked inside of the closure area providing materials. Our preliminary investigation has the Subaru entering the closure for unknown reasons and subsequently colliding with the stationary tractor trailer. The Subaru was reported to be stolen. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol are a factor in this collision. For approximately one hour, all traffic was diverted to the High Street off ramp. Currently only the #4 lane is open in the Northbound direction, and will continue to be the only lane open until the construction closure is completed later this morning. This collision is currently under investigation. If you have any information that could potentially assist us, please contact the Oakland CHP Office at 510-457-2875

Both pedestrians and drivers have equal responsibility when it comes to safety. As a pedestrian do not become complacent. As a driver always look twice for pedestrians and cyclists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haZU9GyebXo

Bicycle commuting is becoming more and more common in the Bay Area, and we want to give some tips on how to stay safe while riding. Many collisions are preventable by just following some simple steps. Avoid or minimize sidewalk riding. Cars don’t expect to see moving traffic on a sidewalk and don’t look for you when backing out of a driveway or turning. Sidewalks sometimes end unexpectedly, forcing the bicyclist into a road when a car isn’t expecting to look for a bicyclist. ...If you must ride on the sidewalk remember to: -Check your law to make sure sidewalk riding is legal; Watch for pedestrians; -Pass pedestrians with care by first announcing on your left or passing on your left or use a bell -Ride in the same direction as traffic. This way, if the sidewalk ends, you are already riding with the flow of traffic. If crossing a street, motorists will look left, right, left for traffic. When you are to the driver’s left, the driver is more likely to see you -Slow and look for traffic (left-right-left and behind) when crossing a street from a sidewalk; be prepared to stop and follow the pedestrian signals -Slow down and look for cars backing out of driveways or turning!
