Why do we cut holes on the roof? Vertical ventilation allows heat and smoke to travel upwards and out of a structure. In a single family residence of one story such as this building the effects are noticed immediately.... By alleviating smoke and hot gases through a vertical opening, when done properly, #verticalventilation reduces, prevents, or stops the mushrooming of gases and smoke and makes interior conditions clearer and safer. Sometimes, more than one hole is necessary. On this particular fire, the truck crew cut three holes before getting off the roof. The fireground is dangerous and can be unforgiving. It isn’t a place to show up unrehearsed. #repost @oaklandfirefighters #toserveandprotect #jobtown #oaktown #experiencematters #knowyourjob #oakland #ESO #bomberos

@oaklandfirefighters Firefighters brought a two-alarm fire that displaced nine residents of a West Oakland neighborhood under control, authorities said Wednesday. At 2:20 p.m., Oakland Fire Department firefighters responded to reports of flames at two structures in the 1600 block of Eighth Street between Chester and Campbell streets in the city’s Prescott neighborhood, fire spokesman Michael Hunt said. More than four dozen firefighters arrived to find a column of smoke tower...ing over a Victorian house and a building next door, and called a second alarm at 2:27 p.m. The fire, which preliminary evidence suggested began on the first floor in the next-door building, was brought under control by 2:54 p.m., Hunt said. #oakland #oaklandfire #workingfire #bomberos #westoakland
