Riley Ashen, North Salinas: Ashen is headed to Sacramento State in the fall to join the Hornet rowing team. Ashen is a two-sport athlete who just wrapped up her third year of varsity volleyball. She was a second-team selection in the Monterey Bay Gabilan Division. Ashen, who carries a 4.111 GPA, also swims for North High.

Hannah Green, North Salinas: Green is headed to Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock to continue her volleyball career in the fall. The three-sport athlete volleyball, soccer and track and field played all over the court for the Vikings in her three-year varsity career. Green, a 4.323 GPA student, was an MBL Gabilan second-team selection and will major in Spanish.

1977 NSHS CCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME First round: NORTH SALINAS (7-2)(MBL runner-up) def. SOQUEL (6-3)(SCCAL champ), 34-6, at Santa Cruz, Nov. 23 -- Del Rodgers rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns to spark North Salinas’ win. Rodgers’ runs were for 29, 72 and 39 yards. The Vikings added other scores on a Mike Agraan eight-yard run and a 23-yard pass from Agraan to Mike Pond. Quarterfinals: NORTH SALINAS def. *SALINAS, 14-8, at Salinas High, Dec. 3 -- Del Rodgers broke loose for two touchdowns in the final quarter to give the Vikings the win. Rodgers dashed 58 yards for the first score but a two-point conversion try miss left North Salinas behind, 8-6. With 3:17 left, Rodgers took a Salinas punt and returned it 66 yards for the clinching score. Salinas had tallied in the first quarter on an eight-yard Pete Agee run.

1977 NSHS CCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Semifinals: NORTH SALINAS def. HILL, 35-15, at Spartan Stadium, Dec. 10 -- Del Rodgers carried 20 times for 240 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings won easily. Rodgers went 62 and 24 yards for the first and third North Salinas scores. In between, Mike Agraan passed six yards to Charlie Garcia. Hill narrowed the count on Mervyn Fernandez’ 29-yard pass from Jack Overstreet, but North Salinas quickly added two more. Final:... ST. FRANCIS def. NORTH SALINAS, 6-3, at Spartan Stadium, Dec. 16 -- Bill Malcolm’s three-yard dive for a TD with 9:43 left in the game provided the Lancers with the win. St. Francis drove 77 yards in 12 plays for the winner, the only time it had the ball in North Salinas’ territory. The losers had dominated the game, but managed only a 36-yard field goal by Steve Raine in the second quarter. Gavin Carr saved the game for the Lancers, intercepting a Mike Agraan pass in the end zone with 1:36 left. See more
