We will make it through... with the help of our community. . It’s hard to find words to write this. Nothing seems to fit the chaos, confusion, fear, anger, sadness, & anxiety of the times. I would like to say that this is the hardest thing that has ever happened to me. But that wouldn’t be true. . As I’ve shared with some of my postpartum clients when appropriate, I experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of my son. The kind they write about in medical texts.... The kind they make books and movies about. It was the darkest time in my life. One I didn’t think I would make my way out of. But I made it through. I made it through stronger. I made it through with a stronger relationship to my child, my mother, my true support system, and a community of fellow warrior mamas. But it wasn’t without a lot of tears, tremendous pain, and loss. And the help of so so many people. . Our little massage studio has now been closed for over a month. All of us have been out of work, struggling to figure out how to make our next rent check, pay for health insurance premiums, or care for the bare necessities. The systems of support being put into place are simply not built for microbusinesses like ours. And our recent change from independent contractors to employees on Jan 1 (as mandated by a change in CA law) further complicates things. It’s an ever changing, byzantine system of information to try to access some sort of assistance. . We normally would have a robust Mother’s Day gift certificate marketing campaign beginning about now. In my heart, I know that we will open again someday. I know that people will always need touch. I know that our clients, largely parents or parents-to-be, will come back through our door and entrust us with their bodies again someday. Today I had to cancel the rest of the April appointments on our books. This was devastating for many reasons. The first is obviously financial. But also, I realized how much I miss touch. Massage therapists are lucky enough to give and receive therapeutic touch on a regular basis. Hugs with my child are lovely. But I miss the dedicated, specific, mindful touch of bodywork.
