Xavier Becerra has been named the next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. He has been a longtime advocate for marginalized communities, fighting for meaningful and equal healthcare, regardless of income or identity. We look forward to working with him and his team to serve LA’s low-income communities. https://www.nytimes.com//xavier-becerra-hhs-health-secreta
We are grateful to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors who voted unanimously to fund the network of nine Self-Help Legal Access Centers for the next three years. These centers assist more than 150,000 people each year and are a lifeline for Angelenos who cannot afford an attorney.
Today marks a new era in justice reform. District Attorney George Gascón announced 5 impactful changes, including ending cash bail for misdemeanors and nonviolent offenses and no longer using three-strikes sentencing, which disproportionately affect Black people. We look forward to working with Gascón to ensure justice and equality are given to every Angeleno.

In civil court cases, 80% of litigants are on their own, not represented by an attorney. County-funded Self-Help Centers located in nine courthouses across LA assist more than 150,000 people per year, at the cost of just $18 per person, and are vital to those living in poverty, with limited English proficiency, or that have experienced homelessness or domestic violence.
As the son of immigrants and a first-generation college graduate, Esteban has always been cognizant of the fact that he came from a less privileged background than many of his peers. He is passionate about addressing the needs of low-income communities in LA. #LatinxHeritageMonth
