Luke 24: Surprising commission Please read Luke chapter 24 on your own and reflect. One word describes the disciples in this post-resurrection account. Doubtful.... When they heard about what happened at the tomb through the women, the story sounded like nonsense to the disciples so they didn't believe (24:11). When Peter saw the empty tomb, he didn't know what to make of it, despite the fact that Jesus had said that He would rise again (24:12). While talking about the crucifixion of Jesus, Cleopas said, "We had hoped he was the Messiah" (24:21). Apparently, the cross proved their hope wrong. How could the Messiah die? Even when the disciples saw the risen Lord with their own eyes, they couldn't believe. They thought they were seeing a ghost. Even after Jesus showed them His hands and feet, they still stood there in disbelief. Apparently, seeing isn't always believing. But you know what's remarkable? That Jesus would commission these doubt-filled disciples to be His witnesses! And He primed them for their mission. To deal with their lingering doubts, He gave a convincing proof of bodily resurrection. He ate a piece of broiled fish in front of them. To prepare them to preach the message of His death and resurrection, Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And finally, to deal with all their fleshly impotence, Jesus promised to fill them with the power of the Holy Spirit. Don't think that you must be strong in faith to qualify for service in God's kingdom. Jesus doesn't commission the powerful. He empowers the commissioned. Jesus is strong and mighty enough to use the weak and the trembling for His purpose.
Luke 22: Merciful prayer Please read Luke chapter 22 on your own and reflect. Even during times of personal agony, we see Jesus thinking about and caring about others. Jesus knew that His death was imminent. The cross and bearing the wrath of God was looming large in His mind. And yet, Jesus was mindful of His disciples and their well-being. Especially of Peter.... "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers" (22:31-32 NIV). Jesus already knew that Peter would deny Him, and as a result struggle mightily. So He pleaded for Peter ahead of time, that Peter's faith would not falter on account of his own failure. And Jesus encouraged Peter to strengthen the other disciples who would undoubtedly be dejected and fearful after His crucifixion. How does a man facing His own death have the wherewithal to care for those who would let Him down? Peter would disown Him three times. Most of the disciples would abandon Him at the cross and flee. Jesus knew beforehand they would, and He still prayed for them! What a merciful prayer from our Merciful Savior. Even now, He is praying for us in heaven. Despite our failures. Despite our unfaithfulness. Despite our sins. Because of His merciful prayers, we can turn back in repentance and grow in grace.

Luke 21: Are you getting ready? Please read Luke chapter 21 on your own and reflect. When Jesus returns, we will see Him coming in a cloud with power and great glory (21:27). He describes it as a day when our redemption is drawing near (21:28), when the kingdom of God is near (21:31). As such, we should be looking forward to this day. But are we? It's so easy to get caught up living day-to-day that we easily forget all about the Day. The day of Jesus' return. Are you living a...s though He is coming back? Jesus warns us saying, "Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap" (21:34 NIV). What are you mindful of each day? School? Work? Career? Family? Social life? Money? Bills to pay? Your favorite sports team? Your next project? The challenge is to keep things in perspective in light of Jesus' return and to have the right priorities. This age is passing away, and it will be no more. Jesus is ushering in a new age that will last forever. Which age are you living for today?
Luke 20: Why do you ask? Please read Luke chapter 20 on your own and reflect. Lots of people are asking Jesus questions in this chapter.... The chief priests and the teachers of the law ask about His authority (20:2). Their spies ask Him about paying taxes to Caesar (20:22). The Sadducees ask Him about marriage at the resurrection (20:33). These people weren’t really after the answers. They were after Jesus. They were looking for ways to trap Jesus (20:26) It’s easy to use questions to mask our true intentions. The questions you ask, the questions you raise, what are they for really? Are you really interested in the answers? Or are you merely trying to sidestep something you must face, namely the reality of God? Jesus confounded the religious people of His time. He was different. They challenged their notion about God, sin, and righteousness. He convicted them of their sins and called for repentance, though they regarded themselves as being righteous. God still confounds us today. He still challenges our notions. He still convicts us of our sins and calls for repentance. We can use our many questions to avoid the main issue: Jesus and the demands He makes of us. It’s good to ask questions. But let’s not use them as excuses for our unbelief and disobedience.
