In honor of March being Women’s History Month, we want to recognize the first ladies in dentistry. Emeline Roberts Jones was the first practicing female dentist. Emeline was married to a dentist, Daniel Jones. Even though he believed that women were not suited for dentistry because of their frail and clumsy fingers, Emeline persisted in secretly studying dentistry. After she secretly filled and extracted several hundred teeth, her husband allowed her to practice with him.... Her career spanned 6 decades and in 1914 she was made an honorary member of the National Dental Association. Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the first woman to receive a DDS. Because of her gender, she was denied entry twice to dental school. She opened her own practice up in 1861. In 1866 after 7 years she received her DDS through the Ohio College of Dental Surgery. Dr. Taylor met her husband the following year and her love for Dentistry was so contagious he decided to pursue a career in dentistry. The pair practiced for another 20 years. By 1900, nearly 1,000 women had followed in her footsteps and went into dentistry. Ida Gray was the first African-American dentist. Overcoming an underprivileged childhood, she learned enough to enter the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1887 and graduated in 1890. Dr. Gray was known to see both black and white patients first in Cincinnati and then in Chicago. She inspired one of her patients to become the city’s second black female dentist.
