Due to the pandemic, cruise lines have been unable to offer their usual itineraries. At least in this one instance, crew members found a new use for their skills and a meaningful way to occupy their time: by rescuing people in danger. The news gives us a chance to consider where we fit in God's plan of salvation. SUNDAY STUDY AND DISCUSSION (9:00 AM OR 7:00 PM) It may seem ironic on this Reformation Sunday (a day to affirm faith) that our lesson begins with a recent article by a Christian who admits that her relationship with God has never been "personal" in the sense of seeing God the Father or Jesus the Son as a close companion. Her account gives us an opportunity to consider what we mean when (or if) we say things like "I have a personal relationship with God" or "Jesus is my copi...lot." I'd like you to consider your own "relationship" with God as we discuss the nature of faith. Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her.

SUNDAY STUDY AND DISCUSSION GROUPS: 9 AM OR 7 PM. Our discussion begins with the case of Omar Farouq, a 13-year-old Nigerian boy, who was sentenced to 10 years hard labor in prison for blasphemy during an argument with a classmate. More than 120 people have indicated a willingness to go to prison to serve out his prison term, each taking one month of punishment on the teen's behalf. Whether the Nigerian president will pardon the boy or accept the offer of substitutes to sa...tisfy the court's requirements remains to be seen. The incident provides us with the opportunity to explore the theological concept of substitutionary atonement, or the idea that Christ took the punishment for sin upon himself, so that sinners might be forgiven and freed.
