Newcomb's Ranch

We will be open this weekend!!... Don’t let the coronavirus keep you inside the house all day. Get up here to the San Gabriel mountains and enjoy the last (and first) gasps of winter!! We got a nice lil snowfall on Thursday afternoon (that has since melted here), and there is quite of snow a bit up the road at higher elevation. We are expecting a lil drizzle and short showers the first half of today with some nice clearing happening Sunday before the next round of weather rol...ls through mon/tues... temps are above freezing so there shouldn’t be any ice on the highway, but watch for rocks and gravel... Now, I could be mistaken, but I hear that elevations higher than 5000’ help to eliminate the chance of catching illnesses like the Coronavirus... we’ll be keeping the place clean and following suggested protocols anyways though!!... Snow levels were supposed to have remained above 7000ft, but things change quickly up here... around 4:30pm we started to get heavy, slushy snow down below 5000ft... the second half of this storm is set to move through the area throughout the day today and we should see some clearing skies through the weekend before the next round hits... We are very grateful to finally be getting some winter weather, however, Newcombs Ranch will be Closed today due to the rain/snow... we look forward to seeing everyone soon, stay healthy down there flatlanders!!...

The Ranch will be closed today while this little winter storm moves through. We got sprinkled on a bit overnight with a lil dusting of snow up higher. More expected through the rest of today. Expecting to be open for Sunday with considerably warmer and drier weather...

This last round of Winter has us buried under almost 3 feet of powdery snow. Unfortunately, most of the Crest Hwy is buried under that same pile of chilly goodness and is closed to all traffic until CalTrans can get it cleaned up and under control. Our parking lot is waist-deep and access to the high country is by snowshoe (and sheer determination) only. That being said, Newcomb’s will be closed for this weekend or until safe access is possible again. We are sorry for Mother Nature’s inconvenience and we look forward to seeing all our friends up here bundled up and having fun soon. ->>NR

So, we got ridiculous amounts of snow over the last couple days... As of this post, I haven’t seen any civilian vehicles up this high. I don’t know if or where there are road closures, but I can say the road here at 5400’ is plowed but frozen solid... We plan on being open today, but that is dependent on our staff (and the public) being able to get here safely. As I get more/better information, I will post updates here... Stay safe people!!... THANKSGIVING UPDATE: Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and though we were planning on being open for breakfast. Due to winter storm conditions and expected heavy snowfall through the next 2-3 days, we will be CLOSED on Thursday. Road closures have been planned in advance of the storm; Angeles Forest Hwy, Big Tujunga Cyn and Upper Big Tujunga Cyn will all be closed as well as the Crest Hwy through to Wrightwood. 1-3 feet of snow are expected this week, with a clearing over the weekend before the next storm hits early next week. We are planning on normal operations for Fri, Sat and Sun... For the next couple of days, stay warm, stay safe, stay at home and have a great Thanksgiving!!!...

Thanksgiving is one week from today and we hope everyone has a chance to be among family and friends. If you wanna escape the scene before it’s time to feast, we’re gonna be open from 8am-1pm!! It’s gonna be breakfast only so that our staff can go home early for the holiday. (Sorry... no turkey here!) Weather forecast is calling for possible storms/rain/snow most of next week so please stay aware of conditions before coming up into the mountains. Chains may be advised/necessary for icy roads, and certainly lower speeds in general during colder seasons can’t do you wrong. We wish all our friends, staff, neighbors.... I guess we wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Just a reminder... the Ranch is CLOSED today in observance of the passing of our owner Dr Fred Rundall... It's a beautiful, breezy day up here... come on up and enjoy your mountains... we have some cold bottles of water in a tub and plenty of pens to sign our memorial list with... we hope to see you all again soon... back to the grind tomorrow am...

I'm deeply saddened to share with you all that my father, Dr Fred Rundall II has passed away. He purchased Newcomb's Ranch from Lynn Newcomb back in 2001. My father had an immense passion for the mountains. He sincerely enjoyed being a part of this unique community in the San Gabriel Mountains. He was a Los Angeles native and raised his family here in La Canada. We will all miss him profoundly. Sorry to our Thursday faithful!!... It looks like we've spread too thin on our staffing and we have nobody to open the Ranch up today... We'll get all the prep work done, and a fresh batch of chili ready, but won't be open until Friday morning at 9am... Stay cool, we hope to see you this weekend!!...

Happy Thursday everyone!!... The Ranch will be open and serving breakfast from 9am-noon today. Mountain temps have been about 15-20 degrees cooler than those in the flatlands. Come on up and enjoy some early summer weather and say "hi"... We look forward to seeing you!!...

Summer is here, and with it come sunny and warm days in Chilao. This week promises more of the same. We are happy to say that we will be open for breakfast and lunch this Thursday. Independence Day hours will be from 9-3 and will have a limited menu. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will have regular hours and menu. Happy 4th of July everyone!!... See you up top!!...
