Dear Patient, We know these are very difficult times for everyone and things are rapidly changing every day with regards to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. We hope you are all staying safe. We wanted to update all of you about how our practice is approaching the current situation. As of this moment, we remain open for business and are taking strict precautions to avoid transmission within our office. Our staff members are being required to continuously disinfect any sur...faces that come into contact with human skin and maintain as much distance from patients and from each other as possible. We have not had any staff members report illness thus far but obviously, should they develop any symptoms they will be asked to remain home until they have fully recovered and received medical clearance to return. When you enter our office, you will find that we are providing hand-sanitizer and gloves to each patient for your safety and peace of mind. But we do ask that all patients who have any symptoms of illness including sore throat or fever or have had contact with any individual who has tested positive for COVID-19, please reschedule their appointment and seek medical attention and/or testing for COVID-19 immediately. To help understand the significance of this pandemic and importance of these safety measures, it is helpful to know the current understanding of the virus, its transmission, and the COVID-19 illness it causes. Coronaviruses is a large family of viruses that are a common cause of upper respiratory illness every year around the world. They are highly transmissible through contaminated surfaces and respiratory droplets. The current pandemic is caused by a novel coronavirus named SARS-cov-2. The majority of individuals who become infected with SARS-cov-2 will have mild symptoms limited to fever, sore throat, or body aches, but a smaller subset of individuals will go on to develop severe respiratory symptoms requiring hospitalization. This progression to severe, life-threatening illness is what differentiates SARS-cov-2 from most of its predecessors. Current estimates place the mortality rate of COVID-19 around 1.5% of those infected, though these estimates during an ongoing pandemic tend to be unreliable. The illness seems to be particularly dangerous for those with pre-existing medical conditions and older individuals over the age of 60. We will, of course, remain responsive and adaptive as new information and recommendations are released but at this time, we feel that we will be able to safely care for our patients with these precautions in place. Our highest priorities are to keep you, your family, and friends safe. Sincerely, Neurosurgical Medical Clinic, Inc.
