Last day of surgery in 2020...a crazy year it’s been for all of us, one that started with a lot of hope and excitement especially for us in eyecare when we thought 2020 is gonna be our year! Boy were we in for a surprise...but through it all, we tried to keep our spirits high, responded the best we could to the weekly and daily changes in policies and guidelines, wore double layered masks, fogged through our goggles,sanitized our hands till the skin cracked, lost sleep worr...ying about loved ones, patients and staff, and carried through with a smile unseen under our N95s. We learned lessons of perseverance, grit and compassion. We learned how to zoom to keep our patients cared for, our meetings up to date, and our friends and family close to our hearts. We cooked, baked, organized, redecorated...we ate a lot, and exercised not enough. We lamented our predicament some days and felt utterly grateful to be alive most other days. Most of all, we have felt connected to eachother, to the people of the world, to nature, to the earth, to our future and our children in ways we had forgotten. Proud to have been interviewed by @bloombergbusiness for an article on the boom in LASIK seen in our practice and around the country. My patients tell me they’re finally coming in for LASIK because of... the fogging with their glasses is a real nuisance the eye fatigue and dryness with contacts and glasses when in front of all day zoom meetings is frustrating they are worried about risk of getting COVID by having to touch their eyes and face when putting in contacts o...r adjusting glasses the extra budget from cancelled trips that can now be diverted to self improvement and spending on elective surgery which was being put off year after year. My patients are loving the chance to finally get LASIK and end the year 2020 with 20/20 (or better) vision!

Today is World Keratoconus Awareness Day.... What is Keratoconus (KC)? It is a worsening eye condition that causes a change in the front layer (cornea) of the eye resulting in blurry vision, double vision, and worsening near sightedness, or astigmatism. It typically starts during teen years and progresses over 10-20 years. . How would you know if you have Keratoconus? It is normally suspected or diagnosed by your eye doctor but you could advocate for yourself and ask f...or a thorough exam using advanced diagnostic tools like a scan of the corneal shape (topography or tomography). You may have KC if you notice change in your prescription, worsening nearsightedness and/or astigmatism, difficulty getting the right prescription (vision never good enough!) . What causes KC? While the cause is unknown, it is believed to be due to a combination of genetic and environmental causes. Eye rubbing aggressively has been linked to KC so if you rub your eyes, please STOP! . What to do if you have KC? Get treated with collagen crosslinking , an in office treatment that stops the progressive nature of this disease and stabilizes the vision. Be sure the surgeon you seek uses the FDA approved approach using the Avedro KXL system and epi-off approach.
