This #wildlifewednesday features the western pond turtle. Although they spend much of their time in the water, these turtles also go on land in order to nest. The western pond turtle is California's only native freshwater turtle. Unfortunately, competition from predators (mainly introduced species) along with other factors has led to western pond turtles becoming a species of special concern in California. Thankfully, researchers and conservationists are working to preserve t...he species and its habitat. #conservation #restoration #wildlife

Colgan Creek receives its name from Edward Power Colgan who was born in Santa Rosa in 1856. Santa Rosa was founded in 1833 as European settlers moved into First Nation Pomo lands, and by 1856 had a grid of streets, with wooden bridges or gravel fords crossing streams like Colgan Creek. Over time, the creek was impaired by roads and even placed into underground culverts east of Highway 101, and emerging from under the freeway into the open air again on the west side of the freeway. Today, restoration of the creek is a Santa Rosa City and community priority.

May Day--a time to celebrate gardening. Have you planted your pollinator habitat garden yet? Today could be the day! Plant four seasons of blooms safe from pesticides--add an irrigation dripper into a decorative plate, and the essential "water feature" in your pollinator garden makes the last touch! https://conservationworksnc.org//conservation-a/pollinator
