- By rewarding inmates who've taken steps to better themselves and incentivizing other inmates to do the same, California is taking steps to create a system that allows inmates to succeed after release rather than one that prioritizes punishment over everything else. -These inmates have taken steps to better themselves and have proven that they are ready to reintegrate into society. In addition, a large portion of the 76,000 inmates are people who've committed lower-level of...fenses and served their community by fighting fires in California. -NBLC's work helps people with criminal histories continue the progress they accomplished in prison, makes their transition into society smoother and lowers their chance of recidivism. #justice #rehabilitation #Newsom #release #NBLC #recidivsm #California #release https://abcnews.go.com//76000-california-inmates-el/story See more

Those without U.S citizenship suffer the harshest sanction for involvement in the criminal justice system, removal from their families, and a country that promised a better and safer life. NBLC's Immigrant Post-Conviction Relief Project addresses the post-conviction needs of our immigrant community and offers to counsel to better prepare immigrants for interactions with law enforcement. Happy Earth Day! Did you know that every year prisoners risk their lives fighting California wildfires? California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation that allows inmate firefighters who are on the front lines to become professional firefighters after they are released from prison. The law gives former inmates the chance to have their records expunged and have their parole waived because of their time as firefighters. NBLC helps people with criminal records find opportunities like this that benefit members of our community but we need your help. Visit https://nblawcenter.org/ to learn more about what you can do.
