Brushing dog's teeth is really important for their hygiene just like us. Baking soda by far is the best choice of tooth paste. It is a natural cleanser and as long as you use just a small amount of baking soda it is fine if some is ingested. Just use about the same amount you would use of toothpaste. Their teeth are much cleaner afterward. I encourage you to brush the teeth once a week minimally and every 6 months keep tabs on them so if the gums are bleeding you can nip that in the bud.Give your dog something that is chewy and crunchy to wiggle through his mouth and get through those spaces. The gums are irritated for a reason... plaque, food caught, loose tooth, cavity. If it still bleeds over a few days of brushing or refusal to let you brush, see a vet.
