Every year during the month of May, the Communication Sciences and Disorders professionals celebrate Better Hearing & Speech. The celebration focuses on raising awareness about communication disorders. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association challenges their members to educate others about the role of ASHA members in providing life alerting treatment. This year, the theme of Better Hearing & Speech Month includes Communication: The Key to Connection. Naturally Spea...king Therapy Corporation (NSTC) truly values the importance of communication. When the company was initially conceptualized, the vison was to create a company that would equip people with finding their best mode of communication. Many people don’t realize that communication involves verbal speech, gestures, and aided communication. Teaching clients who are not verbal to communicate using pictures is one of the most rewarding tasks for me. All individuals have a message to convey and (NSTC) wants to help as many people as possible express their needs and wants. Once an individual is able to access communication, an instant connection is established with their communicating partner. Sometimes, a simple eye-shift to an object or an item indicating a request is all that is needed to send a message and make a connection with someone. One of the most valuable connections that can be made is through a simile. No matter what language a person may speak, everyone understands a smile. So let’s use our non-verbal communication by exercising our facial nerve and smile. How many connections can you establish this month?
