Tis the season of PET GIFTING. With several holidays occurring over the next month, many people are searching for companion animals for loved ones! With my background in shelter work, continued work with rescue, and my current business as a trainer, I have seen this play out in every way you can imagine! While I don't discourage it entirely due to the fact I've seen it play out with the absolute best outcome imaginable, I do encourage everyone to take a step back! In a couple... of months rescues and shelters will be flooded with returns as well as relinquishments/surrenders! I have seen it year after year! I encourage anyone planning to gift an animal this season to do several things! The first of which is RESEARCH! Take a good long look at the type of animal to ensure it is a good fit for your loved one! Ask questions to those closest! Make sure it is something your loved one is ready to take on! Ask their closest if it's planned to be a surprise. The last, find a local trainer! There are more often than not complications with a new animal during their introduction to a new environment. For the puppies and kittens, get them set up for success! You have options! At Natterstad Pet Training, we offer package deals, as well as per session rates. We also offer board and training. And I know good and well there are plenty of amazing trainers and puppy coaches that I would be more than willing to connect you with if our services aren't exactly what you are looking for! Gift some sessions along with the pet! Offer that support as well! Please be responsible this holiday season! Don't overwhelm our shelters and rescues by not taking a look at the big picture! These are all normal, and their are soooo many ways to make the transition go more smoothly! These are all common at the beginning of owning a new dog.
