Check out the size of this boulder compared to my bike. Two weeks ago it lay in the middle of Old Howell Mt Rd. Preventing an alternate safety exit from Angwin to the Silverado Trail. This evacuation route has been closed due to slides for years (it did make for a nice hiking, biking, and horseback riding trail, due to no traffic). However it made Angwin a lethal Fire trap. One tree across the road and the only way out the back way through Pope Valley. One man (or woman) heroically opened up this road during the Glass Fire. Besides that they went down and created the fire break which prevented (along with great tanker bombing) the fire getting to te Lazy J and all of Conn Valley. If we've got a Nobel Prize for Fire Fighting, he or she gets my vote. (More to come).

One of the Pope Valley boys just let me know that the fellow who cut this fire break (about a quarter of a mile down the hill on Conn Valley Rd. From the fork o...f Old Howell Mt. Rd which goes up to Angwin) and saved our neighbor, Joel Gott's Ranch, as well as the Lazy J and possibly all of Conn Valley--also cleared Old Howell Mt. Rd. As a secondary evacuation rote from Angwin. For those unfamiliar, old Howell Mountain Road begins up at four corners where white cottage Road intersects with Howell Mt. Rd. And comes down the hill past the Old Dump amd Meadowood lane to the Silverado Trail. (Old Howell Mt. Rd. Is the route George Bush took after his helicopter, Marine one, landed at the Angwin Airport and then headed down to Meadowood to avoid any demonstrators on the Silverado Trail). Due to slides, this road has been closed for several years. It has become a wonderful hiking biking and horseback riding trail as there is no traffic. Barriers bar entrance at either end. If my sources are correct, and one of the Pope Valley boys took a dozer and cleared this road for evacuees, it could be the first step in our taking back our land from the county bureaucracies which are destroying our watershed, homes wineries and vineyards. Caveat: I have not checked it out personally but will do so tomorrow. More on this in future posts. See more

Bureaucrats can't stand to have anyone tread on their territory. Here are men and women, trained, and willing to fight fires when Cal Fire is overwhelmed. Yet..., Cal Fire wants them to report in, say exactly where they are going, AND NOT GO ANYWHERE THERE IS AN EVACUATION ORDER. They may have an argument re: co-ordinating back fires, but to those of us who live here, we need all the help we can get--public or private--in state or out. This is an embarrassment. This looks innocuous. But it is the end of the fire which burned part of Meadowood and homes on Madrone Knoll. But either Cal Fire, the Dixon Boys or Joel Gott and his crew cut this fire break next to the creek at the bottom of Conn Valley Rd. Just after the "Y" of old Howell Mt. And Conn Valley Rd. It saved the Lazy J from the fire. How does one say "thanks" for such heroic activities?

This is the only minor plus about these fires. Notice how park-like and clear this forest looks after the fire has burned through. I don't have a "before" pic, but I can promise you there was so much underbrush that one couldn't see the bases of these trees. Controlled burns, masticaters, or workers with machetes and chainsaws can attain this look. This is the "natural" state of a conifer forest. Instead, a wildfire roared through here and destroyed homes, wineries, and peoples' lives and dreams. Climate change is not causing these fires. If that were the case, Mexico and British Columbia would be burning as well. It is bad forest management, plain and simple, and the horrific watershed ordinance has made it even worse and more dangerous.
