Give!Guide Day 30: NVCH’s Resident Services During COVID. Our Resident Services Team is working on a record number of Rental Assistant Applications which require scanned ID’s, social security numbers, birth certificates for minors, pay stubs and bank statements from our residents. Once that documentation is secured, our Team is helping residents navigate the application process with Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund, News - Domestic Violence & Sexual Abuse Services, Napa Valle...y Community Foundation, and the California Coalition for Rural Housing - CCRH to secure funding for rent. Our Team is also managing increased calls for domestic violence, neighbor disputes and food insecurity. This is the reality when social isolation due to COVID is mandated or required. Through it all, our team patiently and expertly assists our residents and are re-building the traditional but soon-to-be virtual programs and classes. We believe everyone needs a home and once they have an NVCH home, our Resident Services Team is there to assist with medical, educational, financial, social and emotional needs. Please join us TODAY or TOMORROW the 2020 Give!Guide ends midnight Dec 31! We have a matching funds campaign for every $1 you donate, we get $2! Last week, Napa Valley Register ran a front page story on a Napa grandmother who waited 10 years for a home to call her own: https://bit.ly/3jskf66 The housing crisis is real. This week, NVCH held a Zoom Meet & Greet with Shetland Avenue neighbors to share information and hear what they liked about their neighborhood and what improvements they'd like to see. It's our first step towards the development of a new affordable community in the City of Napa. ... We're working on housing solutions, come join us. #NVCH

Voice mail messages like this one from a resident to Marlene Santiago, VP of Resident Services, make our day: "Hi Ms. Santiago my name is ______ ... and Norma gave me your number so I could call call you and thank you and thank you so much. I came home with six bags of groceries today and I only spent $100. I'm going to spend 100 you know perhaps a month because I can't live on what they gave you for other food... Anyway I just wanted to thank you so much...and you have a good day. Okay bye bye."

Our neighbors, our residents are struggling... Many low-wage workers in the hospitality and agriculture industries who have seen their income drop during the pandemic are now facing further economic losses as well as evacuations due to the fires, said Susana Garcia, with the social equity nonprofit On The Move. It’s just very unfortunate to see pretty much the same families getting hit after hit after hit, and to be impacted in this way, said Garcia, who directs a progr...am that has channeled private donations to hundreds of undocumented residents in Napa since the pandemic began. California is #1 (unfortunately) in the nation's ranking of real-world poverty rankings which takes into account an area's high cost of living, particularly for housing. According to Dan Walters, of CalMatters: "These are outrageous numbers, driven by bureaucratic tangles, misplaced environmental restrictions and high mandated labor costs, and unless state officials do something about them, we will never solve our housing shortage and we will continue to have shamefully high rates of poverty.'
