SCAM ALERT. Beware of phishing emails pretending to come from the Small Business Administration (SBA). Do not open any attachments unless: (1) You are certain you are expecting a message, (2) The actual email address comes from a legitimate sender (not the sender name, the actual email address), and (3) The file extension matches what you are expecting (e.g., .doc or .pdf) These turbulent and confusing times make you vulnerable to cyberattacks. Remain extremely vigilant!

There is a dramatic uptick in phishing activity. Cybercriminals are leveraging global fear and confusion: do not give them your information or perform any payments. We have seen fake email and phone-calls pretending to come from: Department of Health and Human Services Department of Homeland Security Internal Revenue Service... State and city governments Law enforcement They may ask you to provide Social Security Number or payments to receive COVID-19 vaccinations or government checks. Ignore these calls and messages. You may receive actual, physical checks, be asked to cash them, and send money back. These are fake. As soon as you deposit the check, your bank will indeed increase your cash balance, but once the (fake) check bounces (it will) you will be responsible for reimbursing the bank. If and when the government establishes any sort of program to support citizens or businesses, everyone will be notified via official channels (like television and official website of Federal, State, and City governments). You may be savvy enough to understand all this, but your parents or grandparents may not: warn them; cybercriminals target older generations. Stay put. Wash your hands. This too shall pass.
