Today we celebrate, tomorrow we wake up and continue our fight for justice, equity and opportunity for all. #Prop17 and #MeasureJ passed, restoring voting rights for 50,000 Californians who've completed their prison sentence and ensuring at least 10% of local unrestricted general funds are invested into housing, mental health treatment, jail diversion programs and other alternatives to incarceration. We made this possible. We voted together as a commUNITY who believes that ...justice, like freedom, requires action. So today let's take pride in the gains we made for our families and communities but not forget that a more fair, more just society calls on us tomorrow. #justice #socialjustice #equity #equality #victory #change #learn #grow #community #communityfirst #yesonprop17 #yesonmeasurej #mentalhealth #winning #unity #pride

If you're voting today, you'll be making decisions on propositions and measures that impact the future of your family and community. One consequential initiative on the ballot is #Prop15, also known as Schools and Communities First. #YesOnProp15 closes corporate property tax loopholes and invests more than $10 billion of those funds into our schools and community.... This is your chance. Invest in our youth and help to bring in the services and resources our neighborhoods need. ---------------------------------------------------------- #vote #vote2020 #election #electionday #schoolsandcommunitiesfirst #communityfirst #community

For nearly four years, SJLI Urban Health Fellowship and Urban Scholars alumni Amir Casimir couldn’t vote because he was underage, but he knew he had something: a voice. That voice, he told a virtual audience on Tuesday during the Our Vote, Our Future forum with NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook and other youth leaders, was discovered and began to take shape at the age of 14 when he went through a few of our programs. One taught him to identify, examine and develop strategies... for reducing health disparities in communities of color. The other used a culturally-relevant, social justice-oriented curriculum to show him how to advocate for himself and his community. What am I going to do, he once thought to himself. I can’t vote. All I can do is run my mouth. So that’s what he did and that’s what he’s been doing for the last four years as he’s been honing his research and leadership skills through SJLI and the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition. I’ve been able to see that there is power in talking to folks, he said, adding that his particular focus on youth empowerment and political agency is fueled by the belief that it is our job to lay the groundwork for the future and the change we want to see. This November, Amir, who is now 18 years old, sees his role differently because he can vote. He’s not just raising his voice, mobilizing youth and helping to develop action plans that can change his community anymore. He’s journeying toward becoming a voter who uses their power to push for the types of reforms that move us a step closer to equity. #vote #vote2020 #russellwestbrook #youth #leader #health #equality #equity #justice #socialjustice #culture #community #communityfirst #learn #grow #change #leadership #empowerment #inspired #inspiring #empower #power #election2020

Ballot initiatives can be tricky . You may think you're voting one way when you're actually voting another. We did our research and are bringing you our first ever voter guide to provide you with recommendations on the propositions you'll be voting for or against this November. . . At stake for our communities are school funding, investments in young people, housing security, privacy rights, healthcare, jobs, criminal justice reform, expanded voting rights, and fair opportu...nities for women and people of color. Depending on how we vote, we'll move a step closer to getting it right for our families and communities. . . Screenshot this voter guide and take it to the polls or use it when filling out your mail-in ballot.
