Now that you have your marriage certificate, what do you do? First, visit the DMV to update your government issued ID or dri...ver’s license. You will need to take your current ID (with your maiden’s name), birth certificate and marriage certificate. Keep in mind that all these documents must be originals (no photo copies). This could be due to getting married, court order or even divorce. Their service is at no cost. Social security will ask for all the same documents mentioned above. There is no timeline on changing your last name but I would begin with urgent things, like your bank account and any license and permits (life insurance). This way, you could always use either of the last name on non-legal items, such as your credit card. It used to be that you could drive down to the County of your choice with your fiancé and buy your license. Not anymore. Now you need to book an online appointment and complete an application prior to your appointment. Ok, so how do speed up the process? Good question. Have you ever heard about Authorized Notaries? If you haven't, you are missing out.... This doesn't mean that any notary public could issue you a marriage license. These are "special" licensed notary publics ordained by the County to issue you a confidential marriage license (not a public license). Yes it cost a little bit more but you are paying for speed. If you could wait, I would suggest you book your appointment at the County and grab your fiancé with his/her government issue ID. Last tip. Don't limit yourself by where you live. What does this mean? What I am saying is don't buy your marriage license in the area that you live if all the appointments are taken and you need your license sooner than later. If you live in Los Angeles and the next available appointment is in Orange County. Then go to Orange County.
