Yes, Ravi Zacharias was one of the most brilliant apologists in the history of Christianity, a tremendous author and speaker. But I had the privilege of meeting... with him for lunch a few times (he and my Dad are friends), and I say this carefully but genuinely: Talking to Ravi Zacharias was the closest thing I’ve ever experienced to looking into the face of Jesus. Obviously, he’s not Jesus, and he was the first to say he was a flawed, sinful man, which is why he needed Jesus. But in his eyes and demeanor was a kindness, authenticity, strength, gentleness, and wisdom I’ve simply never experienced before. And even though he met thousands of people every year, he still asked questions about my life and would remember details when he followed up later. He was as impressive in person as he was publicly. One time Amanda and I met him for dinner. Amanda was struggling with her prayer life, and I was struggling with some big decisions for my future. Because he’d been so kind and generous and personal in the past, we didn’t mind asking him for advice, even though it was way beneath his pay grade. At one point he said what’s quoted in the meme below, and of course, it changed everything. After the dinner, Amanda and I couldn’t speak for literally 20 minutes because we knew if we did we would burst into tears. I had that experience each time I connected with Ravi. Parts of my approach to and perspective on Jesus and the gospels in The Chosen were inspired by Ravi’s thoughts, and I suspect that is true for thousands of writers, speakers, and communicators. Thus, his legacy will live on for generations. The world lost a giant, but Ravi would want us to rejoice for him today.
