AUDITIONS Casting the Gilbert & Sullivan's comedic operetta, "The Pirates of Penzance." Production description: A hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbl...ing policemen, dim-witted young lovers and an eccentric Major-General, Gilbert and Sullivan's comic musical follows young Frederic, an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual but raucous band of pirates. He disavows the pirates' way of life and falls for the beautiful Mabel. His melodious tones win over the heart of Major General Stanley's songbird daughter, but when the Pirate King discovers General Stanley has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from stealing all of his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an "ingenious paradox" may prevent the budding romance and lead to the death of "The very model of a modern Major-General." WHEN: February 24th Open Call 10-1pm Callbacks February 25th 2-6pm WHERE: Scottish Rite 855 Elm Street Long Beach, CA 90813 REHEARSALS: Rehearsals start March 5th and will be Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's 6-10pm and Saturday's 4-8pm. Rehearsals take place in Long Beach at the Theatre CHILDREN'S ENSEMBLE: Rehearse Saturday's from 10-1pm PERFORMANCE DATES: May 11th, 12th, 13th, 18th & 19th WHAT TO PREPARE: Please prepare a song. (16-32 bars). Song should be in the style of the show that best shows range and acting ability. Please bring sheet music in your key. Accompanist will be provided. Also bring head shots and resume if available and your calendar through May. All conflicts will need to be disclosed. Stipends will be provided for select roles. CHILDREN'S CHORUS (9 years old and up): CHORUS OF POLICE (MALE/FEMALE) Must be able to move well, more comic than the Pirates, most Police will perform as Pirates in Act I. They obey their duty and the law, but are cowards heart. THE CHILDREN'S CHORUS will perform with the adult Chorus of police but rehearse separately until the end of the rehearsal schedule. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN (Seeking males and females 18 years and older for the following) THE PIRATE KING (MALE/BARITONE) Stage age of at least 30, bass-baritone / range: F# c C Eb Swashbuckling, athletic, and handsome leader of The Pirates of Penzance. An adventurer and sentimental, romantic fellow. He thoroughly enjoys the image of himself standing at the helm of his ship with the wind blowing in his hair a la Errol Flynn, charismatic and natural leader. Mabel (FEMALE/SOPRANO) Stage age approximately 20, soprano / range: (C) D c c Db. Young, well spoken and beautiful, very much a young woman of the 19th century. She is genuine and utterly sincere as she captures the love of young Frederick. She needs an expressive voice with excellent diction. FREDERIC (MALE/TENOR) Stage age 21, tenor / range: D C Bb. Young, handsome, manly, and genuine. Inexperienced in the ways of the world. He is so sincerely trying to do the honorable thing; For him, duty is before all. Good Mover MAJOR GENERAL STANLEY (MALE/BARITONE) Stage age 50 plus, baritone / range: Bb c C F. A caricature of an old-fashioned British General. He is "dignified respectability", in the truest sense of those words. Quirky with military discipline, but believable. Excellent diction and articulation important. RUTH (FEMALE/CONTRALTO) Stage age at least 40 years old, contralto / range: G C c F#. Frederic's childhood nanny who seems lost and forlorn at the prospect of losing him, until she does, she shows the most change of emotion, going from clingy and solicitous to self-sufficient and independent, needs to be a good mover and energetic, comic timing important, accent should not be upper class, but location of origin is not given beyond her being British. SERGEANT OF THE POLICE (MALE/BASS) bass / range: Eb c C E, comic role, leader of a band of scaredy-cat policemen who want to appear brave, can be portrayed as somewhat of a ‘bumbling’ or clumsy character, but needs to be a good mover, preferably a good dancer, common English accent. Roles calls for great physical comedy. SAMUEL (MALE/BARITONE) baritone / range: Bb c C The Pirate King's right hand man, he is sincere, earnest, and simple-minded. EDITH (FEMALE/SOPRANO) Soprano range: Ab C c G. One of Major-General Stanley's daughters. Stage age slightly older or same age with Mabel, sensible one of Mabel’s "sisters", she is the unchallenged "leader" of the girls when Mabel is not there to sway their hearts, practical and a realist. KATE (FEMALE/MEZZO-SOPRANO) mezzo / range: Ab C c E. One of Major-General Stanley's daughters. She is outspoken and a bit sassy, but in a fun way, loves to tease - goes through life with a twinkle in her eye. ISABEL (FEMALE/SOPRANO) One of Major-General Stanley's daughters. Stage age younger than Mabel, the youngest of M.G. Stanley's wards, naïve, enthusiastic, and very taken with the big, wide world around her, bit of a dreamer with a tendency to romanticize everything. CHORUS OF DAUGHTERS (FEMALES/ALTOS & SOPRANOS) sopranos / range: Ab C c G, altos / range: G C c E. The more vivid and individual each daughter is, the better. Strong voices are required as the score is vocally demanding. Comedic understanding and some dancing ability will be also be required. CHORUS OF PIRATES (MALE/FEMALE) tenor / range: D C G, bass / range: Eb c C E. Simple minded, tender-hearted souls. Big, full-out singing is what is thrilling about the Pirates. Dancing ability in addition to strong vocal ability and a keen comedic sense. CHORUS OF POLICE (MALE/FEMALE) bass / range: Eb c C E, must be able to move well, more comic than the Pirates, most Police will perform as Pirates in Act I. They obey their duty and the law, but are cowards at heart. The choreography calls for good dancers in addition to good vocal ability and a keen comedic sense.
