Join us for our next Weeks of Cultural Resistance (WoCR) event on Tuesday, March 16 Black Boy Out of Time: A Reading and Conversation with Hari Ziyad. Part coming of age narrative, part radical reflection of their life Black Boy Out of Time is an intimate memoir of a Black person in America, and how letting go of prison-based ideologies can reshape a new identity for the future of Black children. This intimate and personal exploration dives into how self-policing, influen...ced by the criminal justice system and prison-based ideologies, holds Black liberation back. With a focus on personal accountability when it comes to race, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships, Hari Ziyad offers a new take on how prison abolition is a viable way forward for Black children. Register here: bit.ly/BlackBoyOutofTime RSVP on FB: https://fb.me/e/2cZ0JJ0m7 Share widely, hope to see you there!

As Covid-19 outbreaks continue to harm people in California prisons, and CDCR continues to show total negligence in responding to the crisis, we demand the release of elderly and medically vulnerable people in California’s women’s prisons. So far CDCR has released LESS THAN 1% of people deemed eligible for early release based on high medical risk. Please sign petitions at carenotcages.com. @California Coalition for Women Prisoners. #NoMoreDeaths #ClemencyNow #EmergencyReleaseNow

Announcement of Postponement: WoCR 2020 + 20th Annual NoCR Dearest Beloved Community- We’ve been visioning and prepping and dreaming over the past few months to create a multitude of gathering spaces for Week of Cultural Resistance 2020, culminating in the 20th Annual Night of Cultural Resistance. Unfortunately, due to campus guidelines and policies rolling out in response to COVID-19, we will be postposing events to a later date. We want to send big love and gratitude to al...l of the folks on the WoCR + NoCR planning committee, to volunteers, and to the individuals and local + small businesses who were planning to provide food, workshops, resources, art, and so much more. It is clear that with experiences of xenophobia, racism, and ableism, always present and on the rise, it is important to continue creating systems of support and mutual care. Here are some resources that we’ve found helpful (Links below): -Treating Yellow Peril: Resources to Address Coronavirus Racism -UCLA Prof. Explains Racism’s Role in the Coronavirus Crisis -Demands from Grassroots Organizers Concerning COVID-19 -Bay Area Transformative Justice Collective Pod Mapping In the MCC, we know that gathering is vital, necessary, life-affirming, and can be seen as a threat to some. We make this decision to postpone in the spirit of our core value of sustainability and wellness. We also acknowledge that our communities’ sustainability and wellness intrinsically necessitates transformative organizing efforts such as #KeepValFree and #Cola4All. Even as we are unable to gather and show up together this week, we remain persistent in our commitment to amplify these and many other ongoing struggles. As MCC is re-calibrating as new information/restrictions flow, we will be sure to communicate any changes to hours, resources, etc. <3 UC Berkeley's Multicultural Center <3
