Jewish folk. What are your hesitations, your statements of yeah, but _____ (fill in blank) when it comes to your feelings about Palestine and Israel? It took me 20 years to come a place where I can sit with the dissonance inside and still land on the side of human rights, Palestinian rights, and yes even say that I believe there must be another way for Jews to be safe in the world that does not involve ethnic cleansing or apartheid. I don’t want it to take another 20, or even 5 or 10. Look at your yeah buts so you can get your politics in line with your values. For those of you still trying to parse out why your guts are churning and you know something is wrong, and you don’t yet feel ready to relinquish the story of Israel that you spent so much time living and loving. I feel you. I know the discomfort. I’m Guilty of silence and mixed feelings too. But when I look at the whole story, as I realize that the version of history we’ve been told is edited so tightly to completely exclude the voice...s of Palestinians....it moves me to anger in a way I cannot describe. Yo. If you are anti-apartheid, this little action is a start. And I am saying this as someone who was raised to love Isr*el. I was raised with Zionism woven into the fabric of my identity, with the story that we had to do XYZ in the face of those terrorists. And then I became friends with the descendants of those terrorists. What we see today is the culmination of years of American permission and funding of an increasingly apartheid state. We see what a country will d...o when there are no consequences for their actions. I don’t take this stance cuz it’s easy. But it is undeniably the right thing to do. I was raised in the arms and eyes of Israeli teachers and families of friends and now many members of my partner’s fam. I love these people with all my heart for so many reasons, but I cannot abide the ongoing silence and confusion and outright denial in the Jewish community about whether the Palestinians deserve to live peacefully on their land in their homes.
