Movement Fantasque TAI CHI 16.01.2021

I am grateful to all of my students, past and present, for sharing your life together in our Tai Chi practice community. This year, we have been so creative and flexible in expanding our Tai Chi practice to online classes and park practices. You spark joy and encouragement, fun and community by your love of Tai Chi, your friendship, and a common desire to be the very best you can be in this world in this special connection with each other. Happy Thanksgiving!

The MASKED TAI CHI TROUPE It doesn't get much better than this. Beautiful people practicing Tai Chi in a gorgeous park setting. On Sunday, August 2nd, many of us assembled to do an informal Tai Chi and Qigong practice. It was great fun. Everyone wore a mask and we kept a good deal of distance to be safe during this Pandemic. EVERYONE was relieved to finally get to see each other again IN PERSON. Thank you to all who participated. We will do another practice session again very soon! Sensei La Fosse

Movement-Fantasque Students, Family and Friends, Do you know there have been advantages to the studio closing during the Pandemic? There are always silver linings. Here are just a few: 1. ONLINE TAI CHI CLASSES EVERY WEEK... We temporarily closed our physical studio, but have continued to hold classes ONLINE on Zoom. Freedom to not wear a mask and to avoid getting on the road. Great to continue this medication in movement and continue learning the forms. 2. PRACTICE IN THE PARK We just had a fresh air practice at a park in Campbell. Students had every color and pattern of masks, which was rather fun. Students enjoyed a great workout in the open air and a chance to socialize and visit with each other. 3. OLD STUDENTS RETURNING While some students weren't able to make the trip to the studio, ONLINE classes make it easier to jump onboard and join a class. We will be opening a new class soon for beginners. Stay tuned! Louise La Fosse, Sensei

Video-Conference Tai Chi: Treasuring connections while maintaining energy and balance in a new environmental format. While we practice staying at home due to the current state of the pandemic, we want to continue the ability to share practicing Tai Chi and yet not lose the ability to connect with each other in the process. I have observed that many classes are designed so that instructors are teaching in front of a camera pointed at an extremely large group. How can an ins...tructor see students and provide positive/encouraging or helpful feedback if he/she sees only a tiny image? For that reason, I have started holding group classes online, but limiting the number of students. It is important that the use of video-conferencing not deplete one’s energy by staring at a screen that is instructor-centered. After all, we treasure our connection with each other and desire to continue our group practice, continually learning. We also want to keep our energy up and boost our immune system to stay strong. And we derive a lot of energy from each other’s dynamic presence and interactions. In an online video Tai Chi class, it’s important to maintain the capacity to see small gestures, to read the faces of students as they develop their moves and incorporate slow waves of breathing with every step, remaining as fluid as the waves in the ocean. The best design for online classes is one that is student-centered, bringing voices, laughter and conversations together. There is a delicate balance and rhythm in conducting online classes in which we strive to make it feel as much like the studio classroom as possible. There are no mirrors, and one doesn’t have peripheral view of other students. It’s very different indeed. But there are advantages, too, like group chat and sharing of visuals. And most of all, no mask needed. The emotional aspect of observing, practicing, sharing, processing and discussing needs to be ever more incorporated in the video-conferencing approach. At the same time, there is a relaxed ease of practicing in a group from one’s own living room, kitchen, patio or garden. It’s an amazing new world. And although most would say they prefer (as I do) practicing together in person, we are excited and grateful for the technology at our fingertips to practice Tai Chi in the new world of online. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining our Tai Chi online classes, please send an email to [email protected] to be added to the short waiting list. Louise La Fosse, Sensei
