On April 27th, 2021, the City committed to three actions as part of the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge. Firstly we will continue a current native plant enhancement project at Shoreline to increase biodiversity to benefit many local species, like monarch butterflies. Second, the City will engage with community garden groups and urge them to plant native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants. Finally, the City will host a native seed giveaway facilitated through the Mountain View Public Library's Seed Library Program to make milkweed seeds available to the public. Read the pledge here: https://www.mountainview.gov/civic/filebank/blobdload.aspx Remember that you can make a difference by planting native milkweeds and using less pesticides. Protect the monarch butterfly!

Greenings from the City! Welcome to a new series that the City of Mountain View's Sustainability Department will be including in our newsletters and social media. In this series empoyees will share their sustainability tips and tricks. If you would like to sign up for our newsletter, you can do so at mountainview.gov/MVSustainabilityNewsletter. Hi, I’m Autumn, the City’s Climate Corps sustainability fellow. One of the ways I reduce emissions is through bicycling. I’ve never had a car and have always preferred to bike everywhere. This has led me to seek out cities with great public transit and bikeable options. I am so thrilled to live in a place that makes alternative modes of transportation a priority, so I can keep reducing my carbon emissions.
We know that Earth Day is looking a little different this year, so it’s going virtual here at the City of Mountain View! We’re holding two contests with multiple gift card prizes, all centered around creativity and how you restore the Earth in your own way. The first contest is a short video competition and is open to all Mountain View community members. Each applicant must make a video (of 90 seconds or less) telling or showing us how they restore the earth. The second compe...tition is a student poster contest, for grades K-12. The posters will be judged in five age brackets: grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-12. All student entrants must create a poster around one of the following themes: environmental health, clean water, clean air, clean land, food and the environment, plastic pollution, sea level rise, or sustainability and resiliency. First-place winners will receive a $100 gift card that can be used at Mountain View businesses, and second-place winners will receive a $50 gift card. For both contests, the deadline for entries is Monday, April 19th, 2021 no later than 5pm. Submissions can be made at https://bit.ly/MVEarthDay2021. Additionally, please join us on Thursday, April 22nd from 6pm-8:30pm for our Virtual Earth Day Event! We’ll be having speakers from the Planet Bee Foundation, Acterra, Recology, and Cool Block. Community members will also be giving 5-minute ‘micro talks’ about how they’re Restoring the Earth. And finally, we’ll be announcing the winners of the video and poster contests live during the event. Please visit http://ow.ly/LxXh50E6Pz7 for details.
