Yesterday, officers from the CHP Coastal Division Protective Service Detail, had the humbling honor of escorting the procession for fallen San Luis Obispo Police Officer, Detective Luca Benedetti. His memorial service was held at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. There were many who came out and lined the procession route to mourn the loss of Detective Benedetti. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Benedetti family, his friends, and brothers and sisters in the San Luis Obispo Police Department. Luca, you will never be forgotten. This year, in honor of National Police Week, the Moorpark Police Department and CHP Moorpark turned the lights on our station blue. National Police Week was first established in May of 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to honor the lives and sacrifices of fallen law enforcement officers. Each year, the week culminates on May 15th with National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Last week, CHP Moorpark received a very much appreciated delivery of care packages for our officers. With assistance from donations that originated within the community, Ventura County Military Collaborative (VCMilC) reached out to Operation Gratitude @opgratitude to put these bags together. Meet Officer Soto! Officer Soto graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in June of 2017, where he was assigned to the CHP Moorpark Office. Now, after almost four years on the roads in and around Moorpark, Officer Soto just graduated from the California Highway Patrol’s latest motorcycle training academy class. This is an elite two week training course geared at producing the best of the best of motor officers. Now, he must complete his next 30 riding days of moto...r training in the field with a certified motor training officer. This consists of approximately 240 hours of progressively harder riding situations and scenarios under the watchful eye of his training officer. Yesterday (4/22/2021) at approximately 1:06 PM, the #venturapolicedepartment broadcast a Be-on the-Lookout for assistance locating a vehicle that was left running with the keys in it at a gas station in #ventura and had just been stolen. Just six minutes after that broadcast, officers from #chpventura had located the vehicle on SR-126 and were now tracking the vehicle. As the stolen vehicle entered #fillmore officers from CHP Moorpark got into position to intercept it as the ...vehicle continued eastbound on SR-126. With both Ventura and Moorpark CHP now behind the vehicle, the officers attempted an enforcement stop. The driver of the stolen vehicle accelerated away rapidly and CHP officers were now in pursuit. In an attempt to evade the officers, the driver turned off of SR-126 and onto Torrey Road and then Guiberson Road. BIG MISTAKE! There is only one way in and one way out of Guiberson Road. Knowing this, a Moorpark CHP Officer parked on the other end and waited for the driver to come to him. As you can see in the video that was provided to us by a construction worker working in the area, as the stolen vehicle approached, the officer flawless deployed the spike strip, flattening the vehicle’s tires. This pursuit subsequently ended less than a mile away where the driver fled on foot and was apprehended moments later by CHP officers without injury. First, let’s slow down and leave yourself plenty of room to react to changing conditions. Also, today would be a great day to go out and check the equipment on your vehicle. Inspect your wipers and replace them if it’s time. Check your headlights and taillights so you know others can see YOU and you can see what’s ahead. (...Reminder: In Cali., if your wipers are on your headlights need to be on also, day or night) Check your tires, both the tread depth AND make sure they are properly inflated. Check your local weather report. If there are major warnings in your area or an area you are traveling to, make sure you’re prepared (chains, blankets, water). Road CLOSED! CHP Moorpark is on scene with a tree that knocked down power lines across Moorpark Rd at Santa Rosa Rd in Santa Rosa Valley. Crews are en route to remove and replace the lines. Today (12/4/2020) at approximately 9:45AM, CHP Moorpark officers received a call of a crash on US-101 northbound at Lynn Rd involving three vehicles, one of which overturned. CHP Officer R. Salcido and Officer C. Baldonado were first on-scene (@chp_southerndivision ). As soon as they arrived, they assisted the passenger (seated on the guardrail) from the overturned vehicle. Without hesitation, Officer R. Salcido (laying on the ground) risked his own safety and entered the ove...rturned vehicle to help free the trapped driver while Officer C. Baldonado attended to the passenger. Amazingly, the driver only sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by @venturacountyfire and @amrventura. We would like to remind drivers that although most vehicles are equipped with blind spot sensors, you cannot rely on those to alert you to a vehicle you cannot see. Today, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office released their findings in the over two-year long investigation of the Borderline Nightclub mass, and officer involved, shooting. We know it was a complex and challenging investigation, necessitating the time it took to complete. We want to thank the DA’s office, as well as the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, for their efforts and thorough investigation of the events that transpired that tragic night in November 2018. ... The findings reveal the terrible circumstances law enforcement officers faced and confronted that night. The actions of Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ron Helus, along with CHP Officers Todd Barrett and Lidia Espinoza, on November 7, 2018, saved more people from being killed. It is still with a heavy heart that we remember the sacrifice made by Sergeant Helus, who lost his life trying to save others. Thank you to all law enforcement personnel that responded. We will always remember those who were senselessly killed that night and know their loss will never be forgotten. It is with heavy hearts we announce the End of Watch for Antelope Valley CHP Officer Andy Ornelas, ID 21685. On November 23, 2020, at approximately 7:05 PM, Officer Ornelas was riding his departmental motorcycle when a motorist pulled from the right shoulder to make a U-turn directly in his path. Officer Ornelas’ motorcycle struck the other vehicle, causing him to be thrown from his motorcycle. Officer Ornelas was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster. ... Despite significant life-saving efforts by medical personnel, on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Officer Ornelas succumbed to his injuries. Officer Ornelas is survived by his wife, mother, father, brother and sister. Officer Ornelas was a member of the Department for four years. @chp__moorpark was honored to participate in yesterday’s (10/10/2020) @car_ona_cruise dedicated to the 12 victims of the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting, including @vcsheriff Sgt. Ron Helus. The cruise wound it’s way through Simi Valley and included a Porsche wrapped with Ventura County Sheriff decals, Ventura County Sheriff vehicles, a @simivalleypd swat vehicle and restored Simi PD cruiser, @oxnardpolice vehicles, @chp vehicles including a fully restored CHP Crown Victoria driven by Dan Gonzalez, and hundreds of other local citizens that showed up to join the cruise. The California Highway Patrol was awarded a grant to help fund a year-long campaign to combat speeding and aggressive driving. The goal is to reduce fatalities and injury crashes caused by speed and aggressive driving. Split second decisions are made by law enforcement officers on a daily basis. On September 28, 2020, at approximately 9:40 PM, CHP Moorpark Officers made contact with a vehicle with three occupants. Two occupants in the car had guns (one is pictured here) concealed on their person. As the guns were discovered by officers, both subjects began to fight with the officers. They were ultimately taken into custody with no injuries for DUI, being under the influence of drugs, posses...sion of meth, cocaine, and heroin, possession of a billy club, and fighting with officers. Once the guns were recovered from the subjects, the officers learned both guns were BB guns. Can you tell us which gun is the BB gun in the picture?
