Avila Beach circa 1964 The oil tankers in the back have since been removed due to a persistent underground leak that ultimately led to a massive cleanup in the 90’s. In fact, the @calpoly pier was once called the Union Oil Pier, and oil tankers would dock to load up oil as late as the early 1990’s.
