Moon Cat Cafe 02.07.2021

This sweet 16 year old was surrendered to the Long Beach animal shelter. I’ve never seen a sadder cat. Alice could sure use a new home.

EXPERIENCED FOSTER/ASSISTANCE NEEDED A year ago, Zoey’s Place & I helped an injured feral cat heal from a nasty neck wound (will include picture at the end if y...ou chose to see, scroll through photos). At the time, he was not fond of people in the slightest, but after many long weeks of healing, I grew fond of him regardless as one does. When the time came for his release, it was still what was in his best interest and he has lived happily and healthily since. However, a few months ago we got a call that his location was growing increasingly unsafe & he had lost his feeders. The rest of the colony had moved on except for him. With much thought and consideration, we decided to follow proper relocation protocol and transition him to my neighborhoods colony. However, now that he has acclimated properly, he has proven to have had a complete shift with his view on humans (quite obvious from these photos) and our goal is to now find a foster willing to take him in where we will back under Rafiki's Rescue. We will take assistance from other rescues as well if one is available and a foster is not found. He is extraordinarily loving, allows belly rubs, and allows me to pick him up. He wants to come inside and has tried to do so, but I sadly do not have a single spare room available for him I truly wish I did, but I am flooded with fosters at the moment and have no available foster homes. I really would like to give him the opportunity to be a family cat, but to do so I need an experienced foster who can work with him as he acclimates (or a foster-to-adopt). He is currently being cared for by me in my colony, but he is only as safe as a stray cat can be. So while it’s not necessarily urgent, time is of the essence. He is an adult, black, and very noticeably scarred cat due to his pst injury. He is the prime example of an overlooked street cat and my heart breaks for him because he wants to know love. Please considering opening up your home in the OC/LA area and we will provide the rest. He does not mind my dogs when in the yard with him and is not bothered by my personal cats when they are around in the enclosed catio, but a home with no other pets would be preferred while we grow to understand him better, though not required. Email us at [email protected] if you can be his hero

No one likes to think about it, but it’s unfortunately an all too common situation that rescues are forced to deal with. If you pass away, what happens to your pet? Who or what organization is willing to take care of them? Oftentimes, pet owners rely on verbal agreements where family members or friends assure them that any pets left behind will be taken care of. (Or worse, assume a shelter or rescue will take them in, despite the very real persistent problem of low funding... and no available fosters.) But none of these are guarantees as we all know, changes happen throughout life and promises made in years past may no longer be able to be kept tomorrow. Estate planning (ensuring your pets are included in your will and setting aside funds specifically for their care) are the only surefire way to make sure your pets don’t fall to the wayside, if the worst comes to pass. San Diego Humane Society is offering a free webinar on 11/12 to answer these very questions! I couldn’t find it on their event schedule, but if you would like to register, please either call them (619-243-3446) or DM me your email address so I can forward the link to you . #pet #pets #estateplanning #petplanning #petparent #webinar #preparedness #putpetsfirst

Thank you to dedicated pets columnist and incredible cat foster mom, Kate Karp, for sharing this story through the Long Beach Post! I’m incredibly moved by everyone’s kind responses, and already received several suggestions for a new permanent parking location. I also hope that this report will help others keep high alert on the security of their own businesses and vehicles, especially in these uncertain times. No preventative measure is too small: high-definition cameras, ...multiple locks, frequent visits, active insurance policy, and looking out for each other as neighbors. (I’m currently looking into installing an additional steel accordion gate over the glass back door of the truck.) Please stay safe, everyone! As a side note, all the above will help immensely in speeding up insurance claim processing, if the worst happens. The more evidence they have, the better. If you’re a business owner and have not yet compiled a full list of inventory/furnishings/fixtures/equipment and associated values, please do so now! Trust me, this will save you a lot of time and heartache if you ever have to file a claim. Please also consider visiting the link or lbpost.com to help support local independent journalism!

[ Monday 10/19 ]: Quick update - the truck was professionally cleaned yesterday by an incredible wife & husband duo (Kenny & Rogel)! Not only did they spend 3 hours scrubbing down and applying germicide to every corner (including the ceiling), but also took the time to clean every piece of furniture, every fixture, and inside the drawers and mini-fridge. They worked into Sunday evening and did an amazing job. (They also charged the most reasonable rate of all the quotes I received: $250. Can you believe another company tried to quote $600?) Thank you to Kenny and Rogel (@lopezlopezservicesllc), and all of you wonderful supporters for helping to bring Moon Cat Cafe one big step closer to being back to normal!

[ Update, Friday 10/16 ]: I'm just-- beyond stunned. I was hoping to reach the fundraiser goal in two weeks, but all of your support and love and shares combined have blown past the goal in fewer than 24 hours. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! It brings tears to my eyes to think that over the years, Moon Cat Cafe and its mission to help indie cat rescues have positively impacted so many people and communities. I also wanted to provide a quick update on where the donati...ons will be going so far, to maintain accountability: 1) Commercial auto insurance: Renewal quote for 6 months is $1157. (This is the best quote out of 8 different quotes.) 2) Commercial liability & property insurance: Renewal quote for 12 months is $1051. (This is the best quote my agent could get.) 3) Professional cleaning service: I hope to apply the extra donations towards this service. I realized that regular cleaning products may not be enough (or suitable) to clean up the fire extinguisher chemical residue, as well as the waste left behind by the homeless squatter (it includes biological waste...). I'm currently obtaining quotes from local small businesses that specialize in COVID commercial cleaning. This way, it will also provide peace of mind once Moon Cat Cafe opens again, from a public safety standpoint. I have also attached a snapshot from the security footage that was sent to the Long Beach Police Department, showing the homeless guy breaking the glass door to get in the truck. (I don't have high hopes that he will be caught, though.) As a PSA, I do not recommend anyone parking their RV/truck/boat/vehicle at AAA Quality Self Storage (3390 Long Beach Blvd). While there were zero incidents the past several years, it's clearly no longer a safe location. The staff are actually wonderful people who really care and did their best to help me, but the facility is ultimately part of a larger corporation, and the staff has no power to beef up security measures to where it should be without corporate approval. Again, thank you so much to everyone! I will continue posting updates as soon as they happen. Best, Janet

Carson Cat Highlight: Bubo Beautiful Bubo was adopted from the Carson shelter as a kitten, but then returned 10 years later because his owners were moving. He ...was angry and confused for being abandoned, and because of age and initial behavior was put on the euthanize list. We saw Bubo’s potential and his story broke our heart. We pulled him from the shelter and helped him trust people again at our sanctuary. It took over a year, but he finally started to show us his true sweet colors and one of our volunteers took him home to foster. Bubo is now thriving, and after a year with our rescue he is looking for his real forever home. His foster says he loves attention, cuddling, and although he is a big boy, he has the tiniest kitten meow. If you are interesting in having Bubo be a part of your family, please fill out a questionnaire on our website: www.carsoncats.com/adopt #carsoncats #adoptdontshop #catsofinstagram #southbay #redondobeach #elsegundo #torrance #hermosabeach #manhattanbeach #gardena #instacats #instameow #foster #purrfectmatch #losangeles

Update : rescue found, plan underway. Chester's caretaker is trapping him tonight! This is Chester. He lives at a golf course in Hawthorne. He was TNRd by his c...aretaker a year or so ago. His best friend was eaten by a coyote last week and now he's all alone. The caretaker is maxed out and can't take him in. She doesn't even have room to assess his adoptabllity - and she's not a rescue anyway, just a Someone who Does Something by TNRing our of her pocket and going out of her way to provide food for Chester and a handful of other kitties at other locations. I have no space and have anxiety caused chest pains even thinking about how or where I would put another one. I have no room. Do you have room in your rescue for Chester? He may need to be a barn cat, but looking at these photos I doubt it. PM me if you can help and I will put you in touch with his caretaker. Please hurry, before it's too late for Chester.

Help!! DONATIONS NEEDED!! Unfortunately, after consulting with multiple vets and rescuers, it looks like our sweet Mouse may have neurological FIP. It’s very ...hard to diagnose but all of the bloodwork and consults are point in this direction and it’s dire to start treatment fast. We are going to start him immediately on FIP treatment however we need help to afford it. The last month we have been to so many vets and specialists doing every test you can imagine to help poor Mouse. We refuse to give up on him now. He deserves to have a long life especially with treatments showing so much promise. If you can help, please consider a donation of any amount so we can get him the meds he needs. The medication is $250 a week and he has to be on them for 12 weeks in addition to regular bloodwork checks. If you are able to help please check the link in my bio for our PayPal donation link or you can donate through Venmo to @wrennrescues. Thank you friends, I hate to ask but we desperately need you help #fipwarrior See more
