Amazing sea snake footage sea snake venom is 4 to 8 times more lethal than that of a cobra. Because of this they are very misunderstood, they are very gentle and as long as you keep distance and don't block their way they won't bite. Which Cuttlefish fact surprises you : @snorkeldownunder (FACTS) 1Giant Australian Cuttlefish can weigh as much as 3 gallons of water ~23 pounds (10.5kg) 2 Stack 5 toilet paper rolls on top of each other... that’s how long a giant cuttlefish can get! They grow up to 60cm long! (23.62in) feel free to take a picture and tag us in your stories if you do this ... 3 W-shaped-pupils allow cuttlefish a wider horizontal range (panoramic vision), allowing them to squint their pupil down the middle and see directly behind themselves you can’t sneak up on a cuttlefish bet. 4 Cuttlefish aren’t fish- they’re mollusks that have 3 hearts & blue-green blood! Some aquariums have reflected this on their exhibits by putting cuttles 5 During mating season males outnumber females 11 to 1 (so guys gotta be super charming) in fact - because competition is so tough male cuttlefish will display female color patterns & switch at the last minute & mate 6 Giant cuttlefish have a lifespan of 2-4 years 7 Cuttlefish bones are often found washed up on beaches indicating that the breeding season is over - cuttlebones are commonly used as calcium rich dietary supplements for birds. 8 Cuttlefish have a higher skin resolution than an iPhone X (~500DPI) Cuttlefish have the highest DPI of any cephalopod. That is to say: they have more chromatophores per square inch of their skin than any squid or octopus! BONUS FACT- cuz I mean, if you’re still reading, you’re obviously geeking out Repeat after us Octopus do NOT HAVE TENTACLES. They have 8 arms. Cuttlefish on the other tentacle have 8 arms & two feeding tentacles that blast out to capture prey faster than we humans blinkthen retract into sockets beside each eye! Which fact number below do you find most interesting? Do you know any other Cuttle facts? Tag a friend below & introduce them to @octonation ! Don’t keep us a secret. So where’s the cuttlecrew at? Comment squishy rainbow puppy if ya read this far! #OctoNation #explore #nature Reposted from @octonation

It's National Sardine Day! YES, that's a thing... Sardines helped put Monterey on the map as "Sardine Capital of the World" in the beginning of the 20th century. Cannery Row processed nearly a quarter million tons of sardines a season in its peak wartime years. When the industry collapsed, the street was full of abandoned canneries until it was remodeled into a popular attraction with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, hotels, shops and restaurants. Visit Cannery Row and visit historic sites to learn more about the impact of this small, oily forage fish and the workers who sustained this massive industry. Many buildings are converted canneries, and the bridges over the streets connected canning operations to warehouses. Do you enjoy eating sardines? Reposted from @cityofmonterey

Freediving after scuba diving is an UNSAFE PRACTICE. Since freediving can be strenuous exercise, it is dangerous to engage in this activity immediately after scuba diving. Light physical activity (like leisurely swimming or a nice walk on the beach) has been shown to increase your off-gassing efficiency, but higher-intensity activities (like freediving, interval training or weightlifting) may increase your risk of DCI. Therefore, anything more than LIGHT physical a...ctivity following a scuba dive is not recommended. To better understand the physiology behind these risks & learn about other risks associated with freediving after scuba diving, check out our story or our Health & Diving nightlight.
