Here is our newest addition, "Capone" aka "Pony". Cane Corso, Italian Mastiff, 17 weeks old. If you haven't met him yet you will probably meet him soon. He and Zuri join us in the truck on our daily rounds. Looking forward to fall shots, dentals, and overall wellness checks!

It is foxtail season! Please be on the lookout for any eye irritation, tearing, or cloudiness. Call immediately if you see any of the above. We have seen two very serious corneal ulcers due to foxtails in the past month.

Merry Christmas to all from Monterey County Equine! Here is Slade's Christmas pony with many thanks to Caroline Hardman and Kristi Fredrickson for making this possible. 6 months ago this colt had never seen a halter, was not gelded, had already impregnated his mother, and had a severe corneal abscess from an imbedded foxtail. His owner wasn't able to provide the care he needed and Slade had already asked "Santa" for a pony...Halter broke, castrated, eye fixed, and now started under saddle. Welcome home tomorrow Storm Trooper!

Many of you saw these initial wound pictures 5 short weeks ago...update is that the wound is almost completely healed! His mom has provided incredible care on a daily basis. Inevitably, part of the muscle needed to be removed, and part of the skin died off, but the wound has healed incredibly well and he will be back under saddle in another month.

Colic... When the days are hot and the marine layer comes in at night horses don't drink as well as they usually do. The weather change is enough to upset the water balance and can contribute to colic. We recommend regular psyllium for sand prevention, providing a salt block to encourage water intake, good quality hay, and preventative care including dentistry and vaccinations to ensure the best health for your horse! ... Signs of colic (abdominal pain) include not eating, stretching out, pawing, lying down, or rolling frequently...if you see any of these signs, please call us immediately. 831.663.4194

Welcome to spring and hopefully lasting sunshine! Dentistry is a big part of preventative medicine for horses. Their teeth continue to erupt throughout their lives, and because of this they develop very sharp enamel points that need to be filed down to make them comfortable with a bridle as well as improving their ability to grind hay and other feed. This particular horse had developed large "hooks" on his upper front premolars. Monterey County Equine specializes in equine dentistry: we offer hand floating and power tools to address all of your horse's dental issues.
