Weather forecasts are calling for a rain event throughout the Los Angeles County area to begin in the late evening and overnight hours on Sunday, December 27, a...nd continuing through Monday, December 28. As this is the first significant rainfall of the season with rainfall totaling up to 3/4 inch, City staff, and the Los Angeles County Public Works, have been monitoring the forecast in anticipation of mud and debris flow in the burn area from the recent Bobcat Fire. In preparation for the rain, the LA County Department of Public Works has issued a Phase I Mud and Debris Forecast for the neighborhoods of Ridgeside Drive and Oakglade Drive in Monrovia. A Phase I forecast indicates the possibility of minor to moderate flooding and mudflow/sediment deposition on these streets and below burned hillsides. If you reside in these areas, please travel with caution. Those who do not live in the neighborhoods of Ridgeside Drive and Oakglade Drive are asked to avoid the area. In the event that there are mud and debris flow, both the LA County Department of Public Works and City of Monrovia Public Works will mobilize resources to respond to any mud and debris flow activities. For additional information on the post-Bobcat Fire mitigation efforts, please visit cityofmonrovia.org/BobcatFire.

When the Bobcat Fire entered Monrovia Canyon Park, firefighters used a defensive approach to protect buildings and structures, including the Nature Center, Rang...er Station, cabins and restrooms. The fire suppression tactics, which included controlled burns, burned a significant amount of brush in the park but all buildings remain standing with only smoke damage. Some portions of the park remain with plentiful greenery and shrubs, while others are left burned to a crisp. Due to the damage, popular hiking trails are no longer accessible and debris from high above is already rolling down the hills and landing on park trails. In some cases, staff is already noticing trees falling over since the fire. In total, about 278 acres of Monrovia Canyon Park is damaged while much more land area is damaged above the park, but still within the watershed area. With the need for ongoing damage assessments, insurance reviews and repairs, we anticipate the park will be closed for at least six months and possibly longer. During this time, to secure Monrovia Canyon Park, a fence has been installed and a chain lock has been set to secure the gate. Additionally, signs are posted as the area remains very dangerous. The community will be relieved to know that the Hillside Wilderness Preserve suffered minimal burns and will be open to the public much sooner. Staff is installing replacement signage and fencing, where appropriate, but please know that popular trails within the Hillside Wilderness Preserve, including Lower Clamshell Trail, will soon be reopened. Take a look at the Lower Clamshell Trail below. Read the full update at cityofmonrovia.org/bobcatfire.

As we move forward into the recovery phase, city staff will coordinate with various agencies to restore the foothills, including the Burned Area Emergency Respo...nse Team (BAER). The BAER team is made up of specialists in hydrology, soil science, archeology, wildlife biology, forestry and plant biology. These team members will focus on the potential for accelerated erosion and runoff resulting from vegetation loss, as well as, identifying fire-weakened hazard trees. Throughout this period, Monrovia Canyon Park and the Hillside Wilderness Preserve will remain closed indefinitely. Additionally, over the weekend, Monrovia residents may have heard helicopters in the area. These helicopters are utilizing the helipad, located near the Sawpit Dam, since it is the closest in proximity to their drop-off destinations for the south end of the fire. As fire crews continue to work to secure the line between Mt. Wilson and Highway 2, residents will see and hear helicopters. View the full update: www.cityofmonrovia.org/BobcatFire

Incident Command and the representatives from each community believe that the Bobcat Fire is no longer a potential threat to life and / or property in these Foothill communities. Please note that the lifting of an Evacuation Warning does not mean the fire is 100% contained. There will still be smoke coming from the hillside and the air quality will continue to range between moderate and unhealthy for the next few days. In addition to the lifted Evacuation Warning, the City of Monrovia will be withdrawing from Unified Command, but will continue to assist and support in any way possible. Monrovia Fire & Rescue will be patrolling the next couple of weeks to mop up and secure the area and will be keeping an eye on the hillside. Canyon Park and Hillside Wilderness Preserve (HWP) is closed indefinitely. The City will be coming up with a plan to share with our community the current condition of Canyon Park as well as it’s restoration journey. With the Evacuation Warning lifted and Monrovia withdrawing from Incident Command, this will be the only update this weekend. If you have any questions, please call and leave a voicemail at the Community Center at (626) 256-8246. Staff will respond to all inquiries the next business day. See more
