70% of college dropouts leave because of financial concerns. It is our goal to help students understand all of their college costs before they arrive at school in the fall, and ultimately before they decided on a college or university. Tomorrow is National Decision Day -- if you have a student at home or in your family that has not decided on a college, we strongly urge them to sign up for a free DecidED account. ... There they can compare the true cost of their top choices, and make the best choice, for themselves.

Our Financial Need & Ownership Report shows that low-income and first-generation students face significant financial barriers to success in higher education. This is even more evident than ever in today's reality! We propose that Unmet Need and Sense of Ownership are the critical drivers of students’ financial vulnerability. The financial decisions that students face throughout their postsecondary education experience and how well they are prepared to meet these challenges... can drastically impact their lives for years to come. We believe in equipping the student with the information, resources and tools they need to have a strong sense of internal ownership. This then can better position students in making well informed decisions and better outcomes. Moneythink was founded in the wake of the 2008 recession and 10 years ago today, we received our official 501(c)3 acceptance letter as a tax-exempt organization. We’ve empowered more than 32,000 young people in navigating their most important financial decisions and in the last three years alone, Moneythink student-users received $2.4M in financial aid and took out 42% less in student loans, on average. Celebrate our history and help us continue our work by making a tax-dedu...ctible donation today. Your support will go towards our first no-cost college affordability tool we are releasing to students and their families for free! https://moneythink.org/give/

Why work-study is important! Any pay a student earns from a non-work-study job ends up counting against the student on their FAFSA when determining financial aid the following year, not so with work-study. Work-study allocation varies across colleges and are not equitably distributed: "Private four-year universities enroll only 14 percent of undergraduates, but receive 38 percent of work-study money, while community colleges, which take almost half of all students and serve... large numbers of low-income Americans, get 20 percent, according to the Center for Analysis of Postsecondary Education and Employment." COVID-19 has further exacerbated the inequities in our higher education systems, the allocation of work-study amongst universities is no different. Nonetheless, protecting the Federal Work-study program and pushing for equity in the distribution of funds for the program is critical, since it has direct impact on student financial aid package for low-Income, first-gen and underrepresented students in making college affordability a reality. According to The Hechinger Report article "Many states have so many restrictions that the students who need free college most can’t get it" The last thing you want to do is some sort of bait and switch, where students were under the impression that college was free, they did all the things, they enrolled and then they’re getting billed and they don’t understand why. Only the Washington College Grant program was fully inclusive... Plus, the program covers at least four y...ears of tuition and living costs. The report also rightly points out that free tuition community college programs don't address the reality of students struggling to pay because of all the other costs outside of billable tuition fee that make up 80% of cost of attendance, that many students are not prepared for or accounted for. Free-college program tend to serve a high percentage of underrepresented students, so it's even more imperative these programs are providing the resources and meeting the need of these students. Students leave more than $2.9 billion dollars in free federal grants on the table each year simply because they do not apply for them! "Increase in unmet financial need could lead students to transfer to cheaper but lower-performing institutions, accrue more debt, or drop out of college altogether, failing to reap the benefits of a degree while having to pay back their existing loans...Uncertainty around future college plans might cause students to put off filing the FAFSA......Students may also view their award as final, rather than something that they can appeal." https://www.ideas42.org//the-college-student-journey-in-t/ Check out FormSwift to get support in appealing your financial aid award, a great free resources for students and families. #LessDebtMoreDegrees #FAFSACompletion #CollegeAffordability
