Update! Wednesday :Victory! Thank you to everyone who wrote to the planning commission. I just received this from the city, "fulfillment center has been withdra...wn from the agenda at the request of the applicant. ". I am so glad the developer realized that this would be a major fight in Palm springs. Thank you thank you thank you! URGENT! Stop Critical Habitat in Palm Springs from being destroyed! We need your help! A development company from Texas has submitted a pre-application to build a MASSIVE land port in the middle of beautiful untouched desert on Whitewater Road/Tipton Road. This is land that the Palm Springs General Plan has designated as open desert (not development) due to it being adjacent to the Whitewater Conservation Area. The entire 148 acres of the proposed land port (this photo is from the application) would be concrete including a 40-ft high warehouse, 20,000 square feet of office space,1000 trailer stalls, 276 loading docks and 1500 parking spaces. In fact, the applicant says in their cover letter, "the site will be paved entirely in concrete to ensure longevity and provide a more pleasing appearance." The city staff report regarding the proposed project state,s "the desert designation is intended to identify areas to be retained to protect natural scenic and Wildlife resources unique to Palm Springs. " This proposed plan is not permitted under this designation, is detrimental due to its size and location (right next to critical habitat see map..red is critical habitat) and should be stopped before the plans go any further.
