The hack that took down the largest fuel pipeline in the U.S. was the result of a single compromised password. Hackers gained entry into the networks of Colonial Pipeline through a virtual private network account, which allowed employees to remotely access the company’s computer network. The VPN account, which has since been deactivated, didn’t use multifactor authentication. The attack marked the first time Colonial had shut down the entirety of its gasoline pipeline system in its 57-year history. Nation-state actors breached North America’s largest transport network in a reported cyber-espionage campaign. The attackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability in a remote access product to penetrate New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
