Texas (U.S. Supreme Court Docket 19-840), which addresses the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the Court holds that all, or a portion, of the ACA is unconstitutional, taxpayers may be entitled to refunds for the taxes imposed by the ACA. These include the extra 0.9% Medicare tax and the 3.8% net in...Continue reading

Both the IRS and California have extended the deadline to file 2019 tax returns and pay any 2019 taxes due to July 15, 2020. For this reason, and in respect of Governor Newsom's edict that residents of California remain at home, we will be operating on limited hours. At this point, we will no longer hold in-person appointment. If you already have a phone appointment we will call you at the appointed time unless you prefer to cancel for a future appointment. If we have ...your original documents we will store them until operations are back to normal and then you will be able to retrieve them. If you do not already have your documents to us please upload them too our cloud Smartvault (email us if you need a link) or you can send them good old snail mail as hopefully the post office will continue to operate. We will be open and continue to do tax returns until July15th so if you wish to wait to get us your documents our new deadline to receive the paperwork will be June 15th. Returns are being done on a first come first serve basis and we will work try to continue to get returns done and do our best to take care of everyone. As soon as we finish your returns, we will upload our engagement letter, foreign bank account form, and your efile authorization to your SmartVault account. You may print out and sign the documents and then upload them back into the cloud. Or, if you have software that allows you to do a digital signature, that is fine as well. If you do not need a phone appointment at this time, we would appreciate you waiting until the crisis is over and then we will set up an appointment at your convenience. Once you send us your signed documents you will be able to call us and pay by phone. If you have a refund we would like you to get it back in case there becomes a delay at the IRS end. So same procedures we will upload documents have you sign and call to pay. We realize some of our clients may not be able to use our cloud we will work with each person on an individual basis to try to solve this problem. The hope is that once the threat has passed we can all get back to normal. If you feel that you need the return done ASAP because of financial difficulty please let us know and we can work with you. Since we are going to all phone appointments the phone lines will be very busy so if you can email us your questions we would appreciate it. We may call you from personal phones as well to try to keep up with everyone. We will send out additional newsletters as information becomes available. We appreciate your cooperation Thanks Maria & Mary

What you need to know about Tax season and Coronavirus: MJS Tax Services' office is open and we are proceeding as normal. You may still make an appointment to come in. However, if you prefer not to come in due to concerns about Coronavirus, we can upload your completed tax returns to our cloud, SmartVault and schedule a phone appointment with you. If you prefer an in-office appointment, but don't want to come in now, we can schedule that for later in the year once things g...et back to normal. The IRS is NOT extending the tax return due date. It will remain April 15th. Individuals and businesses with an April 15 filing deadline will be given an additional 90 days to pay taxes but still must file on time. Interest and penalties will be waived for the 90 days. At this time the IRS has not extended any other types of payments. California has extended the deadline to file your 2019 tax return and pay any balance due to June 15, 2020. However, since the IRS has not extended its deadline, there is not a reason to extend CA. The deadline to make California 2020 1st quarter estimated tax payments has also been extended to June 15, 2020. Other states have different rules as well. We will not list them all here but if you have a questions about a specific state please let us know.

Unclaimed federal income tax refunds totaling about $1.4 billion may be waiting for an estimated 1.2 million taxpayers who did not file a 2015 federal income tax return. In order to collect the money, these taxpayers must file their 2015 federal tax return by April 15, 2019 (April 17 for taxpayers in Maine and Massachusetts). The IRS estimates the midpoint for potential 2015 refunds to be $879; half of the refunds are more than $879 and half are less. Click here for details.
