Show Spam The girls finally got their gorgeous show photos from the West Palms January last weekend. @lindseylongequine did a spectacular job and the photos turned out to be just stunning. Allie took LeGit around for his first ever rated show, and probably his second or third show ever. We had realistic expectations but I have to admit LeGit blew us away with how good he was. He was a complete gentleman in the warm up, and even though was a bit nervous the first day, he ...came back on day two and jumped around like a pro. We were so proud of him and considering he hasn’t shown much and has only been practicing being around horses for about three weeks, it couldn’t have gone better. These two are still getting to know each other but so far they’re looking so good and I could not be more excited for their future. Back in the Saddle Chloe and Flamingo were on fire this morning for their jump school. While we were having endless weeks of pouring rain, Chloe was visiting family over winter break. Jumping the Shark This baby horse has been learning and progressing so fast. He’s made tremendous strides towards becoming a more mature horse and is going to be a proper jumper. I’m so proud of how far these two have come together in such a relatively short period of time. They’re really starting to work as a team and coursing is getting easier every time we practice. Coming in Hot As per usual, IEL is always an interesting experience. Chloe and Flamingo started the day in the JV jumper division and ended by moving up to Varsity and earning an 11th place. The fence height of 90cm wasn’t exactly what we had signed up to jump, fortunately the office was very understanding and allowed Chloe to move up to the Varsity at 105cm. This was their first official outing at this height, and I have to say I’m so beyond proud of them! We have been s...chooling this height with ease but it’s another thing to take it into the show ring. Chloe’s mental game has gotten so strong and Flamingo is in tip top shape and has been a gem since we have his show routine locked down. It’s not always easy to roll with the punches, especially on show day, and Chloe was a rockstar today in how she handled everything. Won’t be long before these two are stepping up again. In the meantime, the 1.0m-1.05m classes at Thermal will now be a breeze. Out of the Dark With the light disappearing so fast at the end of the day we’re often finishing in the dark. Fortunately we have terrific lights on our arena, making it easy to keep riding into the later hours. #tbt to the time we threw Alex up on the best baby horse at Thermal and had her play adult ammy test rider. Safe to say she had a blast and looked super for being out of shape. Patience is a Virtue This guy has been on the mend for a while but it felt so good to sit in him today. After coming back to work in June, Soto was getting fit and was going better than ever. Around late August he started showing some weakness in his right shoulder and foreleg as he did with his left shoulder after the injury to that leg at Thermal. So we decided it was back to walking as there was absolutely no need to risk his soundness and rush him back into work. We w...ant to bring him back once and do it right, so he can stay sound and happy for the foreseeable future. I’ve been hand walking him daily for 45 minutes to ensure he’s getting out and not destroying the barn. The quality of the trot in hand on his right front is now to the point where he should be able to start some light work. It felt so good to be able to sit on my beloved horse and not have him bouncing off the walls and enjoy his time today. Hopefully after about a week under saddle again we’ll start adding some trot snd see where we’re at. Maybe someday he’ll make it back out to the desert, but right now I’m just so pleased he’s happy and we get to be back to riding. Under the Lights Since Chloe was out of town for the holiday through the weekend we decided to make today jumps school day. Safe to say the dark did not deter the flying Flamingo. They made short work of the 1.0m-1.05m mini course in preparation for IEL in a few weeks. We’ve been fine tuning some tack and bit changes to help Chloe have a more controlled ride for the first few days of competition and the results have been fantastic so far. Knowledge is Power We’re also so excited for and proud of our own Kathryn for her performance as a stable manager at the EAP National Training Session in Ohio. While we were in Thermal, she was at Lake Erie College soaking up the EAP experience. The group of riders that she was stable manager for won the Nations Cup style competition and she even had a few of those horses come back in the ride-off. One Hot Tamale Kathryn has been getting back into jumping some taller jumps lately in preparation for her EAP clinic in August. Today’s aim was to get around a shorter course to start to build the fitness level and stamina it takes to maintain the level of riding necessary to get around a full ten plus jump course at 1.0m and up. Fortunately Nacho was the best boy, and even though he hasn’t jumped much lately he was so excited and tried his little heart out. Kathryn did ...an excellent job piloting him around the course, taking all the flat pole work we’ve been doing and executed this course almost perfectly. It’s easy to forget that Nacho can be a lot to handle around the jumps as he’s so polished and normally a touch lazy on the flat. Once he starts jumping though, he wakes right up and it was great for Kathryn to practice on a horse with some go around a course. It won’t be long before Kathryn’s got herself nice and fit on the flat and over fences and EAP will be a breeze. Growing Up Sadly I didn’t get any pictures or video of today’s ride, but this little baby was such a good girl. She’ll be four this month and we’ve been working on starting her on her way to being a proper riding horse. We’ve been using many different methods to keep her busy while learning good basic skills. Ponying has been a great tool with her and today that helped us get our first steps of trot under saddle. It was only a handful of steps, but that’s the start of man...y more to come. Show News Chloe and Flamingo also decided to enter the show last minute and had an eventful weekend. California Girl Gini and I have been working hard on building a relationship. She is a strong independent woman who knows what she wants, but often around the fences she just takes over. While I appreciate the enthusiasm, I’ve been trying to convince her it’s a team effort and I’m able to do more than hold on and steer. Today we really became a team and she trusted that I’d let her do her job, if she let help her by letting me do mine. This line, while not perfect, was an... amazing feeling of the two of us using our skill sets and knowledge to really become a team. She stayed just quiet enough in front of the line and then I allowed her to move up to the first jump, while she got forward in the line she still listened and we agreed on a distance going out. I am so beyond excited to really get going with this mare and I may be biased, but I think she’s something special. We’re Back! It has been so busy the last week I have not had the time, or in all honesty, the energy to post to Instagram. Fortunately life is returning to a semblance of normal so hopefully it’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming of daily posts. Last week’s show was an interesting experience with a lot of highs and lows. Kiana and Gem pulled some good ribbons in their 65cm and 70cm classes, despite having rails. Gini and I got to know each other better and we s...tarted off with an excellent round on schooling day, but her lack of fitness made it difficult for her to give it her all the next few days. I’m still so proud of our first round and I know once we’ve really got each figured out, we’re going to have so much fun. Once the show was over we jumped straight into a busy week full of lessons and horse marketing. Taking videos and getting good pictures, followed by posting the ad and responding to a flood of messages asking for video and more info over the next two days was time consuming. Wednesday was vet day. Routine vaccinations to keep up with competition requirements was the first item on the docket. Soto was officially cleared to go back to work, which was a wonderful feeling and I’m so excited to get him going again. After talking with our vet we also decided that Otis should get Osphos as a way to help him stay happy and sound. We’re really looking forward to seeing how he’ll do with this addition to his maintenance. Monday Funday Mondays normally get a bad rap, but they’re one of my favorite days. The barn is always so quiet and it feels like we have to whole place to ourselves. Good as Gold It was a very successful day at the SBCRC show at Earl Warren Showgrounds for Team Mischief Farm!! Today’s plan was for everyone to challenge themselves to put together everything we’ve been working on with the added pressure of a horse show, while still trying to have fun. Fortunately all three riders passed the test with flying colors. Kiana and Gem were first to go in the 70cm and put in two solid rounds for two 6th places. Considering we’ve only had this... pony for six days and Kiana hasn’t shown since Paso, these two could not have done any better. The only way they would have placed higher is if the classes had not been run as optimum time. Next to go were Ally and Chloe, both did the 85cm class as a warm up class to get around and get their nerves out. Once it got to 90cm they brought their A-game. Ally ran to 1st in the 90cm open with a stellar first round and super quick and handy jump off and 6th in the Jr/Am class. While Chloe dominated the 90cm Jr/Am class with the fastest first round of the day and a spectacular jump off with only four faults, which still resulted in a 4th. Being the fastest four faulter paid off. I cannot express how extremely proud I am of these three girls and the hard work they’ve put in and their determination to get to this point. Everyone is really looking forward to Sunshine Series II in just a few weeks, and if today is any indication they will all be a force to be reckoned with. That Showing Feeling We’re looking forward to getting back in the show ring this coming Saturday. We haven’t shown since Paso Robles back in August, as many of the shows we have planned on attending have been cancelled. Mind Over Matter Today was an action packed day as we put on a faux show for everyone to practice the look and feel of doing two show rounds. It turned out to be a great exercise in preparation as there were some absolutely spectacular moments and some really nervous and tense moments. The only one to just work on a few singles was Kiana. After a decent spill last weekend during an otherwise perfect ride, it was time to get back in the saddle and over some fences. Dealing... with anxiety in her everyday life is hard enough, let alone when she gets nervous on a horse. I’m so proud of how hard Kiana worked today to put the anxiety out of her head and get the job done. I had to push hard to get her to feel like she could do it, but once she got started she was on a mission. She has come so far since she has started with me and I can’t wait to see her continued improvement in confidence and skill level. The Whale is Back! I got the absolute pleasure of having Cali and Nicole come for a visit today. I haven’t seen them since Nicole fell of in August. We’ve been in constant touch and she was finally able to get Cali over for a ride. I actually had not ridden him until the day she came off and even though I wish it had been under better circumstances, I have to say I loved riding him. Working Hard, or Hardly Working? When anything is done well, it looks easy. It’s the reason why everyone watches the Olympics and gets inspired to try new sports. As riders we should strive to make our riding nearly invisible by riding each horse exactly how he needs to be ridden. Sometimes this is complicated by a size or strength difference. Ally can have a hard time holding Nacho up because she is a twig of a kid and he can be a bit on the heavy side. We’ve been work...ing on exercises to get her stronger and ways to use her leverage to lift him up better. This three stride from the other day shows our work is paying off. All the Pieces Coming Together Today was a busy day full of really good lessons. Not every ride was perfect, but so much progress was made in everyone’s ride. Chloe had an excellent jump lesson with Flamingo and coursed 90-110cm and looked like an absolute pro doing it. They got to test out the course we built yesterday and made it look so easy. Straight Lines Today we worked on staying straight and together through the lines with Ally and Nacho. Nacho is naturally a wiggly horse and tends to like speed up and throw his head, neck, and shoulders when he’s excited. This creates a squiggly, hopping mess for Ally to deal with around corners or through lines. So with the aid of a chute in the middle of the line, that kept getting narrower, and guide poles on the second jump, Ally was able to get Nacho perfectly strai...ght. This also improved her abilities to keep him lifted and in a consistent rhythm in the line, which got her a beautiful distance to the second jump. It really all comes down to flat work. We know a super horse like Nacho has the jumping part down pat, it’s that flat part that he tends to forget himself and get excited. That’s why we work twice as hard on the flat portion of jumping and we always see such improvement in riders and horses.
