Shared with permission from publisher Joanna Cotler Books, an Imprint of HarperCollins. For young adults and teens -- books that offer different perspectives about the military experience in our country. Veterans Day is on Wednesday. We'll look at books that feature Navajo code talkers, women as pilots in WWII, an escaped slave in the American Revolution, what it's like to have a service member in the family right now, and Japanese Americans who fought in Europe even though their parents were forced to live in internment camps during World War II, and a couple m...ore things you can borrow from SDPL. I'll provide a list so you can request these books from the library, in addition to information about a documentary about the LGBTQ service members who were drafted in WWII. There's much more to read out there, too. What would you recommend? Why is Veterans Day on November 11th? Do you know someone in the military? How would you honor veterans on November 11th? Here's a list of the items you can request from SDPL and online resources about veterans and the meaning of Veterans Day: https://bit.ly/2IjNED6 See more

Banned Book Club will discuss A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle on Tuesday, November 24th at 6:30pm. It's a classic children’s science fiction book, intriguing story for adults, too. Challenged for various reasons over the years since it was published in 1962. People have argued that it's too complicated for children, and earlier critics disapproved of its plucky female protagonist. The Mira Mesa Library is holding 6 copies at the front desk. Feel free to ask for one over the phone or pick up at the front desk! If you would enjoy joining in the discussion, or simply sitting in and listening, please email book group facilitator Pam Stevens, [email protected], by Monday, November 23 at 6 p.m. for the meeting ID.
