Maangchi, YouTube's Korean Julia Child, is a culinary legend. Emily Kim, born Kim Kwang-sook (), grew up in Yeosu, South Korea where she learned to cook from the ladies of her family. In 1992, Kim moved to Missouri with her husband and found the Korean food on offer to be majorly lacking. So, she took matters into her own hands and started cooking the traditional Korean recipes she’d grown up with. Years later, after a divorce and after her kids had grown up, she decided t...o take her love and knowledge of Korean cuisine, or hansik, to the next level. She adopted the alter ego Maangchi and started a Korean cooking Youtube channel. She found the existing Korean cooking tutorials in English to be rife with mistakes and wanted to pass on her smarts to others seeking authentic Korean recipes and cooking techniques. Maangchi, with her playful wardrobe and loud makeup, brings a sense of fantasy to all her videos but at the heart lies well-researched and accurate tutorials, made with love.
