You look fabulous! We would like to congratulate you on completing the first step towards your healthy smile! There is a little discomfort from the pressure in the first few days which is coming from the brackets and wires which are tied together with small bands. This applies the needed gentle pressure to move your teeth in a desirable position. Don’t eat food that could get stuck in brackets that can bend the wire. Goodbye Gum, Candy, Soda!! You also need to involve more in your oral hygiene maintenance than before to prevent gum disease and caries. Don't forget to check out your hygiene kit

In my last post, an article I have discussed saliva ( also known as spit) and its importance in oral health. In this post, I will discuss the lack and increase in the production of saliva and related issues with that. - Lack of saliva in the mouth also commonly known as Dry mouth or Xerostomia. -Too much saliva in the mouth known as Sialorrhea or Ptyalism. -1)Dry mouth( Xerostomia) is caused when the salivary glands don’t make enough saliva. This could be due to a variety of ...Continue reading

Importance of Saliva (Spit): -Let’s understand the importance of Saliva ( commonly referred to as our spit). Saliva is a clear liquid derived from blood, which is an extracellular fluid that is produced and secreted by salivary glands in the mouth. ... Our Salivary Glands: There are a total of three pairs (six) of large salivary glands known as the Parotid, Submandibular, Sublingual glands alongside hundreds of smaller glands too. These glands make saliva which empties into the mouth through openings called ducts. On average, roughly 1000ml-1500ml(2-4 pints) of saliva is produced by these glands per day. Usually, most saliva is made during the day in comparison to nighttime. This is why it’s critical to brush and floss nighttime. Submandibular glands produce the most(70-75%), Parotid glands produce about 20-25% saliva, and small glands produce small amounts of saliva. -To understand the role of saliva to maintain oral health and digestion first we need to know the contents of the saliva. In humans, almost 99% part of saliva is made up of water. The remaining part consists of electrolytes, mucus, white blood cells(WBC), epithelial cells, enzymes, and antimicrobial agents. -Role in Digestion Saliva contains enzymes(such as amylases and lipases) which help in the process of digestion of fats and starches. Saliva also helps to keep food moist, thus aiding in swallowing. -Maintaining oral health: These enzymes also are helpful in breaking down food particles entrapped within dental crevices, thus saliva helps keep the mouth clean. It also helps prevent dental decay because it also contains antimicrobial enzymes such as lysozymes, lactoperoxidases, and lactoferrin alongside with antibacterial compounds such as thiocyanate, hydrogen peroxide, and immunoglobulin A. Saliva also keeps the surface of your teeth strong by helping with the natural remineralization process through providing good amounts of electrolytes(minerals) such as calcium, chloride, phosphate, sodium, potassium. Additionally, saliva prevents our oral mucosa from drying out. Hopefully, you understand why we need an appropriate level of saliva in the mouth. I would like to discuss now two conditions(lack of salivation and excessive salivation) in my next article. Stay Tuned! #imortanceofsaliva

With all that is going on in this current climate we, from Ever Smile, would like to wish everyone well and hope that you are all safe. The current wildfires that are rampant across California are extremely harmful to the state and to our health. Inhaling the harmful smoke is very damaging to our lungs and airways because they swell and block the flow of oxygen. Thus, Dr. Minal recommends that everyone (of all ages) avoid exposure to high levels of smoke. The smoke can lead ...to a hoarse voice, difficulty with breathing, long periods of coughing, and mental confusion. It is also important to detox after smoke exposure. Specifically, Dr. Minal recommends drinking a lot of water, rinsing your sinuses using Neti Pot, and breathing in steam from boiling water. If you must go outside, we recommend that you wear a mask. Once again, we hope everyone stays safe and healthy. See more
