Moderated by Dr. Sahar C. Abi-Hassan Abdul Samad, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Mills College* What is the role of social media platforms in the rise of right wing extremism in the U.S? What events led to the 2020 election and culminated in the insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021? This panel of experts will discuss how social mobilization through social media has contributed to the spread of extremist politics in the US and the world, and provide the research findings by distinguished scholars in extremism in democracy. We are bringing together experts in extremist politics and new social movements from the NYU SMApP project, Dr. David Art and Dr. Arely Zimmerman. With this panel we hope to bring to the Mills Community an honest discussion of the impact of technology on the spread of extremist groups. Discussion led by Dr. Sahar C. Abi-Hassan Abdul Samad, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Mills College. Panelists Dr. David Art Dr. David Art’s research interests include extremist political parties and movements, the politics history and memory, and comparative historical analysis in the social sciences. He will be discussing his most recent work entitled The Myth of Global Populism, with additional commentary on the recent insurrection at the U.S. Capital. ~~ Dr. Arely Zimmerman Professor Zimmerman’s work focuses on citizenship, race and activism. Her most recent book entitled By Any Media Necessary: The New Youth Activism examines the political significance in youth organizing and civic participation.
