MIG principal Rick Barrett was recently featured in a program for San Diego Design Week, which was held from September 9th to the 13. Also on the panel were Glen Schmidt FASLA and Mark Morris ASLA. The program covered Mission Valley’s Open Space Renaissance, and Rick highlighted two of MIG’s ongoing projects, the Town and Country River Park and the San Diego River Discovery Center at Grant Park, which are re-envisioning the landscape and open space of Mission Valley. For the ...Town & Country project just south of Fashion Valley Mall, MIG played a key role in the planning and landscape architecture for the 4-acre park. Key features include the transformation of surface parking into public parks, stormwater quality improvement, and restoration of the San Diego River in this corridor. This project also includes interpretive elements that speak to the history of this portion of the San Diego River in Mission Valley! A little further up the river is The San Diego River Discovery Center at Grant Park, which has been a longstanding project for Rick, who originally became involved 15 years ago, working with Rob Hutsel of the San Diego River Foundation and the Grant Family, to transform a former mining parcel into a park site. This project will provide hands-on, science based nature education and experiences to 25,000 students each year, and will provide an important ecological resource that will inspire the next generation of River and nature stewards! Rick Barrett and MIG are pleased to play an integral role in the enhancement and development of open space in Mission Valley. For more on the open space renaissance in Mission Valley check out the San Diego Design Week program here: https://sddesignweek.org//mission-valley-an-open-space-ren For more info or updates on the San Diego River Discovery Center at Grant Park visit: https://www.sandiegoriver.org/discovery_center.html

MIG is proud to be working with the development team that has created the Midway Sports and Entertainment District's vision. This plan was developed by long-time San Diegans for San Diego, focusing on creating a hub for our region's sports and active lifestyle activities with the bonus of a 12-acre park and numerous amenities. Please take a moment to review the two projects in a Virtual Open House https://lnkd.in/gn7gfxm created by the City of San Diego and share your thoughts. If we get this space right, it will be a catalyst for transforming a blighted area, creating new jobs, affordable housing, and new revenue for the City and the surrounding community.

While indoor dining has been re-closed in San Diego due to a rise in Covid cases, Mayor Kevin Faulconer has issued an executive order waiving permits for dining on sidewalks and in parking lots, opening up more space for restaurants to offset the loss of indoor dining. During the pandemic, outdoor dining and other ways of reducing the spread of Covid have become popular and many public spaces have been converted into mix-use areas. Let us know what you think of the new sidewalk cafes and parking lot dining options. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com//san-diego-waiving-pe
