At last Thursday’s MSG meeting, the members of the space held a discussion on whether we’d support @ucscbsu ‘s updated statement and demands to their letter addressed to Chancellor Larive and the UCSC community. From our discussion we unanimously agreed to continue our support for BSU in their pursuit to gain better accommodations and care for Black students on campus. Their statement and demands are available to read within our linktree in our bio. - On behalf of Merri...ll Student Government (MSG), the MSG Executive Board and members for the 2020-2021 year align with the previous Executive Board in that we denounce white supremacy and are in alliance with Black Student Union’s (BSU) updated demands outlined in their letter to Chancellor Larive, UCSC’s campus administration, students, faculty/staff, alumni, and the campus community. Merrill College’s ethos is exploring cultural identities & raising global consciousness, so it’s imperative for a space such as MSG to uplift the voices of BSU and stand in solidarity with the aim to eradicate anti-blackness. MSG is in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as BSU’s demands. MSG will continue to do as much as possible to support and protect Black students within our campus. Signed, Merrill Student Government May 20, 2021

Alexa Manning (she/her) was Chair from 2019-2020 and Treasurer beforehand for MSG. Here’s her testimonial about MSG: MSG was a huge part of my first year on campus by giving me a way to feel not only like I was a part of the Merrill Community but actively improving it as well. I used my time as Chair to try new things and while not all of them worked out, I was still able to make a large impact on MSG as an organization and provide the same welcoming space that I experi...enced to many more students all while learning myself. Holding positions like Chair of MSG are learning experiences that are hard to come by; it is a rare opportunity to be able to learn how to truly be a part of a community and lead from within rather than lead over others. If you’ve been a part of MSG and would like to talk about your experience, please DM us and let us know!
