A massive stroke or traumatic brain injury requires a higher level of care from a team of fellowship trained specialists and critical care nurses. This #NationalCancerSurvivorsDay we’re championing your fight, tenacity, and courage. To all cancer survivors, we marvel at your strength and are inspired by your perseverance. To nurses, doctors and caretakers, thank you for the humankindness you use to help patients see the other side of healing.
Did you know there’s a link between diabetes, heart disease, and stroke? Dr. Sukhmani Singh, endocrinologist, and Michele Shain, Memorial Hospital's Senior Director of Cardiac and Neuro Services, explained the connections during a live-stream discussion at today’s Go Red for Women Digital Experience hosted by the American Heart Association Southern California. We’re feeling inspired to make healthier choicesand we hope you are, too! The first step: education. Learn more about heart health and stroke prevention here: https://dignityhlth.org/3wpMSaZ
Thanks to all who joined us at today’s Here for Health Pit Stop event in partnership with CityServe Kern County and Kern Behavioral Health & Recovery Services. Together, we provided free health screenings, mental health resources, and food boxes. Dignity Health's Art & Spirituality Center also provided a dose of fun in the form of take-home art kits.
Dr. Laura Ragoonanan knew she wanted two things out of a career: she wanted to make an impact and wanted a challenge that would be engaging. The career she found was in the field of neurology. Her favorite part of each workday is seeing a patient get better and she’s often inspired by those in her care. Dr. Ragoonanan is serving as a Kern County Go Red for Women ambassador to share with women the importance of assessing your risk for heart disease and stroke and taking steps... to reduce your individual risk. She also wants everyone to learn to recognize the warning signs of a stroke using the F.A.S.T. acronym. In partnership with JJ's Legacy, Dignity Health is proud to honor Chantal Yvette Martinez-Murray as the 2021 Legacy of Humankindness Award recipient and Bakersfield's 2021 Donate Life Floragraph Honoree. In 2017, Chantal passed away, donating both of her kidneys, tissues, liver, lungs and heart. Chantal's gift of life impacts so many individuals and brings much peace to her family. We're humbled to be able to honor her legacy.
Each year Mercy & Memorial Hospitals hosts the Angel Baby Memorial Service to provide an opportunity for families who have lost pre-term babies, in one of our birth centers, to celebrate the life and loss of their little one. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the memorial service is being held virtually. Please take time to pause and reflect as you watch this service. If you would like to visit the cemetery on your own, Greenlawn Southwest is open this weekend and there are keepsake poems available at the Celebration of Life building.
