When taking your dog swimming, make sure the water temperature isn’t too cold. Pets can get hypothermia just like you. If it’s too cold for you to be comfortable in the water, it’s probably too cold for your pet. Visit our blog for other water safety tips for #HealthyAndSafeSwimmingWeek. The pool, beach, or lake may look like an unlimited supply of water to your pet. However, it’s not safe for your pet to drink. Chemicals in pools can make them sick, salt water at the beach can cause salt poisoning, and other natural bodies of water can have bacteria, algae, or parasites. Always be sure to bring along fresh, clean water for your pet to drink! #HealthyAndSafeSwimmingWeek More water safety tips are available on our site: https://hubs.la/H0MRKC40

To safely introduce your dog to water, make sure you don’t force them in. Throwing a pet in who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic and keep them from wanting to go near water in the future. Keep it fun and make it a game with a favorite toy! #HealthyAndSafeSwimmingWeek For more water safety tips, visit our blog: https://hubs.ly/H0MRHzC0

We’re celebrating #ProudPetParents and the pets they love. Meet Rhubarb, our featured Pet of the Week! > Pit Bull Mix > Almost 3 years old > Rhubarb's favorite things to do are snuggle, give kisses, and make new human and dog friends. She came to see us at MedVet Chicago to get her knees fixed, and her family says the surgery and therapy teams were so kind and informative throughout the entire experience. Rhubarb loved coming to her appointments because of all the attention ...she got! Luckily, they got Rhubarb back to being her crazy, energetic self. MedVet has hospitals across the country that are providing care for pets and their loving families. Are you a #ProudPetParent? Share your pet with us at https://hubs.la/H0Mg7vM0 and we may highlight them on our social channels!

MedVet is proud to be a member of the ACVO National Service Animal Eye Exam Event where our ophthalmologists perform complimentary screening eye examinations for service and working animals in May. Unfortunately, the event is cancelled this year. However, this doesn’t dampen our appreciation for the work these heroic animals perform every day.

It’s #LostSockMemorialDay which is a good reminder to clean out your drawer of those single socks that have lost their mate. Sometimes we blame the washer or dryer for the missing item. But some of us have mischievous pets that like to steal them or (even worse) eat them! Our surgeons have often had to remove socks from pets’ gastrointestinal tracts.

Presents are pretty, but not everything that makes a great gift for your family is great for your pet. Keep an eye out for these potential dangers. And make sure to clean up wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows so pets don’t ingest them!

Many of us love to make food a big part of our festivities at this time of year, but did you know many foods we enjoy can be dangerous to pets? Fatty meats, poultry skin, bones, onions, avocado, and others can lead to serious health problems or even death. Drinks can also be harmful. As little as one ounce of alcohol can kill a small cat or dog. And, remember that some baked goods, like fruitcake, are made with alcohol and can be dangerous, too. Help avoid a holiday trip to the ER by keeping these foods away from your pet.
